Best new Xbox Game Pass games to play this weekend (May 29-31)

Polygon RSS FeedAustin Manchester2 min read(3 months ago)

Overview & Key Takeaways

Here are some of the best games added to Xbox Game Pass this week.

May has been a stacked month for new games, and Xbox Game Pass' first and second waves of new titles in May show why. Mixtape has been loved by nostalgic millennials, while Forza Horizon 6 is already looking like one of the best games of the year.

But those aren't the only games added to Xbox Game Pass this month. Here are three great titles that landed on the subscription service in the past week.

1 The Outer Worlds: Spacer's Choice Edition

The Outer Worlds: Spacer's Choice Edition is the 2023 re-release of Obsidian's hit 2018 sci-fi RPG (and now the only version available for some platforms). It includes upgraded graphics, a higher level cap, and all of the game's DLC. A recent patch included numerous bug fixes and performance enhancements, so it should be a top-of-the-line experience now. In The Outer Worlds, you venture around the cosmos recruiting allies and exploring corporate-owned colonies, as the universe of the game is dominated by megacorps.

2 Escape the Backrooms

The Backrooms started as a creepypasta and has now been adapted into one of the scariest movies of the year. If you see the new A24 film this weekend and want more horror full of yellowing wallpaper, check out Escape the Backrooms. After being released for Windows PC last fall, it just landed on consoles and Xbox Game Pass this week. Alone or with a group of up to four players, you'll have to, well, escape the Backrooms and all the horror they hold. Over 30 levels await with different mechanics and monsters throughout.

3 Echo Generation 2

Echo Generation 2 is a sci-fi deck-building RPG that takes inspiration from 1980s adventure movies. It features cosmic monsters and alternate dimensions, so it might be as close as you can get to a Stranger Things game for the time being. Play as six different characters with unique playstyles as you venture through various worlds, like a neon cyberpunk world and a black-and-white spooky world.

GTA 6 Has Already Made $400 Million+ From Preorders, Apparently

According to a third-party research company, GTA 6(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/grand-theft-auto-6-everything-we-know/1100-6503729/) has already brought in more than $400 million in revenue from preorders. Sensor Tower's sales tracker for GTA 6(https://sensortower.com/grand-theft-auto-VI/sales-tracker) states that Rockstar sold 4.38 million copies, including any returns, through August 18, generating $429 million. The research firm said the sales mix is 77% PS5 and 23% Xbox Series X|S. This data is not confirmed, but it would not be a surprise to learn that GTA 6 is performing exceptionally well already given the massive hype behind it. Preorders began on June 25 for the $80 standard edition and $100 Ultimate Edition. According to Rockstar owner Take-Two, preorder numbers for GTA 6 are unprecedented in the video game industry(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/gta-6-preorders-are-unprecedented-across-the-industry-take-two-claims/?utmsource=dlvr.it&utmmedium=facebook), though the company declined to share an official figure(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/gta-6-preorder-numbers-wont-be-revealed-because-they-could-be-misleading-take-two-ceo-says/). So far, more people are preordering the game's $100 edition(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/gta-6-could-have-had-an-even-higher-price-as-100-edition-proves-popular/). GTA 6 preorder numbers are expected to climb higher still, as experts believe the majority of preorders will come in the last week or so before launch(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/gta-6-preorders-alone-could-pay-for-production-budget-expert/). One analyst has said GTA 6 could achieve 25 million preorders by launch, and that would work out to about $2 billion in revenue(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/gta-6-preorders-alone-could-pay-for-production-budget-expert/). That's enough to cover the game's development budget and the majority of marketing expenses. GTA 6’s proper marketing campaign has not begun yet–fans can expect it to kick off with the August 27 trailer on Netflix(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/netflix-gta-6-exclusive-seems-doomed/). Following multiple delays, GTA 6 releases on November 19 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The standard edition could have been even more than $80(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/gta-6-could-have-had-an-even-higher-price-as-100-edition-proves-popular/), but Take-Two's Strauss Zelnick said the company wanted the game to be in reach for most people. For comparison, GTA 5 launched at $60 back in 2013. That same $60 is equivalent to about $85 today due to inflation.

Xbox’s Latest Console Update Will Finally Let You Choose Old Saves To Delete🟩 Xbox, Multi-platform

Xbox’s Latest Console Update Will Finally Let You Choose Old Saves To Delete

Xbox's latest console update is rolling out now to Xbox Insiders, giving players more control over the home screen and saves, as well as improvements to profile customization. As part of the update(https://news.xbox.com/en-us/2026/08/19/xbox-insiders-october-2026-console-features-2/?ocid=PlatformsocomcxbotwLinklrn8.19.3), which will first roll out to Alpha and Alpha Skip-Ahead Xbox Insider members starting today, tiles can now be more easily removed from the Recent Games and Apps list at the top of the Home page, including the entire Play History tile. For those who want to hide the home screen and bask in the glory of their background art, a new immersive background mode will let users hide the home page and UI with a click of the right thumbstick, bringing the background front and center. The update also introduces more control over local saves. With the update, players can easily view, sort, and delete local saves based on size under the new Manage Local Game Saves section in the settings menu, allowing players the ability to free up storage space by getting rid of old or unneeded saves. Previously, players could only delete all local saves, without the ability to pick and choose specific ones. Recent save-game data will still be backed up automatically and sync across devices as usual. !(https://www.gamespot.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Xbox-Update-Manage-Local-Game-Saves.png?w=636) The latest update allows players to manually choose and delete local save data. Profile badges aren't new, but it wasn't always clear what each one represented. With this new update, detailed information about each badge, including when and how it was unlocked, can be viewed. Those lucky enough to have earned the Day One achievement for playing on an Xbox One on its November 22, 2013 launch day will also score a new Day One profile badge. Other improvements coming as part of the update include nice quality-of-life changes to wishlists that will see purchased games automatically removed from the list, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma, who took over for Phil Spencer in February, has put an emphasis on console updates since taking the helm earlier this year. Earlier this month, a console update added the ability to include chat audio in game captures, gave users control over cloud saves, and added bigger wishlists. Other improvements added in the last few months include new gamerscore badges, longer character limits for Gamertags, game hubs for Xbox 360 titles, and the ability to play games from the cloud while they are updating(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/xbox-may-have-just-solved-a-major-annoyance-about-huge-game-updates/). The updates come as Sharma works to "reset" the Xbox business, laying off 3,200 employees(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/xbox-layoffs-studio-closures-and-spin-offs-everything-announced-today/) over the course of the next year and divesting from studios like Double Fine and Compulsion Games. Meanwhile, Xbox console prices have continued to rise, with the latest price hike going into effect on August 1(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/xbox-price-hikes-are-now-in-effect-worldwide/), raising the price of the 512GB Xbox consoles by $100 and by $150 for 1TB models.
