The Witcher 3's new DLC will leave Nintendo Switch players behind

Overview & Key Takeaways

After a successful Cyberpunk 2077 port, CD Projekt Red left fans of Nintendo's portable hanging with its Songs of the Past announcement

Developer CD Projekt Red surprised everyone on Wednesday by announcing that The Witcher 3 will get its 19th content update in 2027 with all-new DLC, Songs of the Past. That's over a decade after the initial release of the cherished open-world role-playing game, and it follows a number of already massive expansions and free content updates. Though it's a year away, news of more The Witcher 3 has been met with resounding applause — by everyone who isn't a Nintendo Switch owner, that is.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Songs of the Past has only been announced forPlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X thus far. The lack of a Nintendo Switch 2 version isn't terribly surprising, as the platform hasn't officially received an upgraded port. But the original Nintendo Switch did receive a version of the game in 2019 that is currently being billed as The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Complete Edition. Songs of the Past isn't out yet, so technically speaking, calling that game a Complete Edition isn't wrong. All the same, Nintendo Switch fans are feeling left out of CD Projekt Red's announcement.

"Big miss for CD PROJECT RED," one Nintendo Switch fan wrote on Reddit. On X, another fan distilled their disappointment with a simple crying emoji.

There's good reason to hold out hope that Songs of the Past will come to Nintendo platforms, however. The Nintendo Switch version of The Witcher 3 didn't come out until four years after it was available on other platforms. Presumably, some of that had to do with the Nintendo Switch's limitations. Nintendo Switch 2 is a more capable machine, but it still lags behind some of its competitors.

If Cyberpunk 2077 is any indication, CD Projekt Red and co-developer Fool's Theory will need to do some optimizing before Songs of the Past can be enjoyed on Nintendo's console. But the studio's sci-fi game is widely regarded as one of the most impressive Nintendo Switch 2 ports on the platform. With that experience under its belt, a Witcher 3 DLC port might take significantly less time than it took for Switch owners to get the game in the first place.

Nintendo is a publisher that hates to share the spotlight, though. It's possible that a Nintendo Switch version of Songs of the Past is indeed in the works, but CD Projekt Red won't reveal it until there's a Nintendo Direct — just as it did for Cyberpunk 2077's announcement. A showcase like that would be a perfect opportunity for CD Projekt Red to sell a Nintendo Switch 2 "Ultimate" version that comes with all the Witcher 3 DLC. Said port could also offer Nintendo-specific features, as we saw with Cyberpunk 2077's platform-specific controls and the game's enviable Nintendo Switch packaging. And if the Polish studio could cram all of Cyberpunk 2077 into a cartridge, then Nintendo Switch 2 fans may not have to worry about having to deal with controversial downloadable Game-Key Cards.

So, sit tight, Nintendo Switch 2 owners. You'll probably get to ride Roach again... eventually.

One Of This Year’s Biggest Games Is Coming To Switch 2 Next Year

Pearl Abyss has announced that Crimson Desert is planned to come out on Switch 2 in 2027. In fact, the developer behind the huge hit--which has sold over 4 million copies(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/crimson-desert-continues-to-reach-new-sales-heights/1100-6539176/) on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S--has a rough release window sometime between January and June. The open-world action game heading to Switch 2 had previously been discussed by Pearl Abyss, but the company's latest earnings letter(https://www.pearlabyss.com/en-US/Board/Detail?boardNo=15177) confirms Crimson Desert for the hybrid system. "In the case of Switch 2, the game has reached a playable baseline, and we are currently conducting technical reviews regarding performance optimization and quality standard compliance, targeting a release in the first half of next year," the financial briefing states. Switch 2 is the only system listed for platform expansion of Crimson Desert, with Pearl Abyss adding that no mobile version is currently planned. How the game translates to the hybrid system will be fascinating, since it offers such a ridiculous sandbox to play with(https://www.gamespot.com/gallery/crimson-desert-might-be-the-most-ridiculous-and-feature-packed-sandbox-yet/2900-7672/1). The developer is also "currently conducting extensive research from both technical and gameplay perspectives" regarding multiplayer for the game. However, the company is clear that introducing multiplayer is a "complex" endeavor. Crimson Desert made over $180 million(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/crimson-desert-has-already-made-180-million-and-its-developers-are-just-getting-started/1100-6539892/) for Pearl Abyss earlier this year, and it's been one of the best-selling games in the US for 2026(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/tomodachi-life-living-the-dream-beat-every-other-game-in-the-us-last-month/1100-6540051/). 2011 The Lord Of The Rings Game Gets Surprise Re-Release Today

Out of nowhere, the Embracer-owned Aspyr Media announced and released a new edition of The Lord of the Rings: War in the North today across PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, and PC. The game was originally released in 2011 for PS3, Xbox 360, Switch 2, and PC, but now it's available on the latest generation of consoles for $20 (or $18 through August 25) as part of a "Legacy" edition. The new version features online or local split-screen co-op and "optimized" solo play, though further specifics about the updates and upgrades were not detailed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GgZuaXTDEo War in the North was originally developed by Snowblind Studios, which closed in 2012. The game takes place in Middle-earth, but doesn't adapt the books or movies. It does, however, feature characters and story details from J.R.R. Tolkien's books and Peter Jackson's movie series, following EA's own games that only had the rights to elements of Jackson's movies specifically. The game has three different playable characters: the ranger Eradan(https://lotr.fandom.com/wiki/Eradan(Ranger)), the elf Andriel(https://lotr.fandom.com/wiki/Andriel), and the dwarf Farin.(https://lotr.fandom.com/wiki/Farin) Players can swap between each during battle. The characters have their own unique skills and abilities, and players can upgrade them over time with new weapons and powers. The game also incorporates the franchise's iconic eagles, with players able to call in Beleram(https://lotr.fandom.com/wiki/Beleram) to fight. Some of the characters players will meet in the game include Aragon, Gandalf, and Elrond, while the game also takes players to famous Middle-earth locations like Rivendell, Lorien, The Lonely Mountain, and Mirkwood. The Lord of the Rings might be set for a revival for video games, as Embacer--which now owns the rights to the series--has teased a renaissance for The Lord of the Rings games in the future(https://gamesbeat.com/a-new-generation-of-j-r-r-tolkien-games-is-coming-lee-guinchard-exclusive-interview/). Kingdom Come developer Warhorse is making a new The Lord of the Rings RPG(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/new-lord-of-the-rings-rpg-heres-everything-we-know/), while Crystal Dynamics is said to be developing one as well(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/new-the-lord-of-the-rings-game-coming-from-tomb-raider-studio-report/1100-6539137/). Both studios are owned by Embracer.
