Pitt, Tarantino, and Fincher's big movie hits IMAX before Netflix release

Overview & Key Takeaways

The Adventures of Cliff Booth, a sequel to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, is getting a surprise theater release this November.

For a certain scholar of internet film hype, the words “David Fincher directs a Quentin Tarantino script” sound like the kind of fake rumor that used to melt Ain’t It Cool News talkbacks in the early 2000s. And yet, somehow, it’s real — and headed to IMAX.

Netflix announced on Wednesday that The Adventures of Cliff Booth, the Fincher-directed sequel to Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, will get an exclusive two-week IMAX run beginning Nov. 25 before arriving on Netflix on Dec. 23. Brad Pitt returns as Cliff Booth, Tarantino’s stuntman-philosopher-murderer(?), only now it’s 1977 and Hollywood looks a lot grimier than the sun-drenched fantasyland of 1969.

The supporting cast includes Elizabeth Debicki, Scott Caan, Carla Gugino, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Peter Weller, and Anora standout Karren Karagulian, alongside a stacked lineup of Fincher regulars behind the camera. That includes Erik Messerschmidt (Mank, The Killer), who returns as cinematographer to do fake film grain right, and production designer Donald Graham Burt, carrying the torch from Once Upon a Time.

I still can’t wrap my mind around it. Tarantino and Fincher are two of the defining filmmakers of the last 30 years, yet feel like they operate in two different dimensions. Tarantino is all motormouthed conversations and celluloid fever dreams. Fincher is the exacting technician famous for endless takes and a digital photography sheen that has weirdly defined prestige TV since he minted Netflix with House of Cards. How will it all meld together?

Reasons to be optimistic: Fincher already proved he could elevate another famously dominant writer when he worked with Aaron Sorkin on The Social Network. And for as much of a steamroller as Tarantino might seem with his language, he was more than happy to let Tony Scott have at his True Romance script back in the ’90s. Judging by the movie’s teaser, which dropped during the Super Bowl last February, Fincher hasn’t drained the Tarantino-ness out of the material. The Adventures of Cliff Booth might be the “pickles and peanut butter” of 2026 moviegoing.

The IMAX rollout itself is also a weird little Hollywood story. Netflix already had those premium screens reserved for Greta Gerwig’s Narnia movie before that project shifted to a 2027 release date, leaving a sudden opening in a calendar. So while Dune 3 and Avengers: Doomsday duke it out over available large-format screens in December, Thanksgiving belongs to Brad Pitt wandering through a smoke-stained 1977 Los Angeles directed by David Fincher and written by Quentin Tarantino. Works for me.

This New Roguelike Wants To Make Its Difficulty More Welcoming

Murals(https://www.gamespot.com/games/murals/) might look like a stylish take on the Hades roguelike formula at first glance, but Disney Illusion Island developer Dlala Studios isn't aiming to copy Supermassive's homework. Instead, the studio is looking to put its own spin on the genre(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/murals-turns-famous-fairy-tales-into-a-silly-action-adventure/), as it fuses dark fairy tales and hews closer to the action-first approach of modern-day Doom and Diablo. One other big difference in Murals is that it'll offer a customizable approach to difficulty, as Dlala Studios says it wants to prioritize player fun over punishing runs--unless you're into that kind of thing. "There are difficulty selectors, and you can kind of tweak some of the individual settings," Dlala CEO, Aj Grand-Scrutton, said to GameSpot. "We've kind of got some of the high-level ones you'd imagine: enemy damage, enemy health. We've also got stuff that affects the player's health. Something that design director Grant Allen was really keen on in Disney Illusion Island, we tried to make it as welcoming as possible. "And whilst this is obviously a slightly more core genre, we tried to do the same here. When we're building, we don't care about player deaths. Our goal isn't to kill the player; it's to make sure they have fun. We try to make it as customizable as we can so everyone can get through. Even if you're a button-masher, that's a legitimate tactic in our rules." https://youtu.be/D42nkf8EHMk Grand-Scrutton added that the moment-to-moment gameplay of roguelikes like Hades inspired the fast, frantic combat in Murals, but the goal was to capture a "persistent, linear" experience within the fairy tale worlds that players will explore. As mentioned above, Doom and Diablo also helped inspire the game's design, and Allen added that an indie game called Blazing Beaks also served as an influence. "For me, it was kind of like looking at those games and understanding the experimentation that they had," Allen added. "But obviously, it's very finite how long you have those for in those games. It was more like looking at our game as more like a child's science kit." Revealed during Gamescom Opening Night Live(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/gamescom-opening-night-live-2026-all-the-biggest-announcements-games-and-trailers/), Murals will see players trek through hand-painted fairy tales that have gone spectacularly wrong. For example, Sleeping Beauty is an insomniac, and Rapunzel's own hair is trying to murder her. As the amnesiac protagonist, it's up to you to defeat distorted legends from lore and take down the enigmatic Creator. Murals will launch for PC in 2027.
