Overview & Key Takeaways

When you consider jumping into a 23-year-old game like Eve Online, the thought is daunting. Hundreds of thousands of veteran players with thousands of hours of Eve Online gameplay, located across thousands of systems, all with their own individual or faction-led objectives, with the capability to wipe you out in seconds without a second thought? Yeah, that's terrifying.

But there are plenty of reasons to persevere. There's a vast community, and despite the perception that they may be initially hostile, they're actually an incredibly warm bunch of people. There's the 70-year-old Council of Stellar Management elected member, who admits she may have slipped up a few times on her journey to the top. There are countless attendees at Fanfest who are only too eager to give you tips or welcome you into their faction. But how do you break through that initial wall to discover the community, and get involved in its epic battles?

With the Cradle of War expansion, which launches on June 9, new players, known as Capsuleers, will be introduced to a non-PvP starter space called Exordium. This area will hold new players' hands a little tighter, introducing them to the game's core mechanics, gradually increasing in complexity until they feel brave enough to spread their wings and explore the rest of Eve's vast universe.

You'll be surrounded by other new pilots, but seasoned players also have the option to head to this new area and help guide Capsuleers through the first steps of their journey, if they so wish. There's no limit on the amount of time that rookies can spend in this safe space, as developer Fenris Creations--formerly CCP Games--is keen to allow new players the time to learn at their own pace.

New players can expect to learn about how to make an impact across New Eden, so they can gain the knowledge and experience to join in on fleet operations, larger conflicts, and the new military campaigns that are also being added with the Cradle of War expansion. Military campaigns are structured conflicts with clear objectives and easily-trackable progression that take part over multiple locations. The key to success is large-scale participation, something Eve players do on a daily basis already.

After graduating from the starter area, you can take part in the Epic Arc missions--these new additions are playable simulations of battles that took part across New Eden's history. There's one for each Empire, and they help to teach the history of each faction, showing their identity, ideals, and enemies. These missions are available to all Capsuleers, not just newbies, so even if you joined Eve years ago you can relive conflicts that defined the game years before your arrival.

Other Eve announcements that took place across Fanfest's keynote speech included eight new ships, including four new Tech II command carriers, and a new titles and achievements system that will allow Capsuleers to track their activity and showcase their accomplishments.
