Devil May Cry Netflix Creator Has Good Advice For Bloodborne Movie Team

GameSpot » All News RSS FeedTamoor Hussain6 min read(4 months ago)

Overview & Key Takeaways

Adi Shankar has had success in adapting video games into animation, having worked on multiple seasons of Castlevania alongside Konami and Netflix, as well as with Ubisoft for Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix. More recently, he has been collaborating with Capcom on Devil May Cry, the first season of which launched on Netflix in 2025 to a largely favorable reception.

Now, with its second season, Shankar and team are delving deeper into the story of Dante and Vergil, as the two characters come to grips with their origins, the divergent paths their lives took following a family tragedy, and how their two perspectives shape them and the fate of a world that hangs in the balance. It also embraces Devil May Cry 2, the video game series' most divisive entry.

Of course, with as much experience as Shankar has in taking video game source material and adapting it for animation, we would be remiss not to get his perspective on the latest high-profile announcement of a similar project: Sony's adaptation of From Software's Bloodborne.

Of course, with as much experience as Shankar has in taking video game source material and adapting it for animation, we would be remiss not to get his perspective on the latest high-profile announcement of a similar project: Sony's adaptation of From Software's Bloodborne.

Speaking to GameSpot, Shankar expressed excitement that video games are gaining more attention as sources of interesting storytelling that could work in other formats, but stressed that their success depends on not being swallowed up by the corporate machine and treated as just another intellectual property.

"It's cool that the [video game adaptation] island that I've been kind of on ... it's not really growing because islands don't grow, so it's more like ships are emerging and they're like, 'Oh, I like this island,'" Shankar said of the rise in interest around adapting video games. "That's cool. It's an interesting kind of experience. I think to me, [adaptations are] a different thing. All my stuff is creator driven. Devil May Cry [is] very creator driven, right? Sure, it's Devil May Cry, but it's very much my version of Devil May Cry.

"Captain Laserhawk, sure it was Ubisoft's IP, but it was me putting it into a blender and being like, 'Oh, the assassin's going to be a frog. And Splinter Cell's Sam Fisher will have no legs.' I think the challenge with video games is a lot of the games were made by a handful of developers who then go on and do other things and then it becomes intellectual property owned by a corporation that then gets swallowed up by another corporation, merges with a third corporation and then gets swallowed up by a giant conglomerate somewhere, and then gets managed by a bunch of brand managers."

Shankar's main piece of advice to the companies involved is to "just hand it to the creator, hand it to the creatives and you'll get something." This, at least initially, seems to be something Sony is aware of to a degree, given that one of the key figures involved in the Bloodborne adaptation is Seán "Jacksepticeye" McLoughlin, an avowed Bloodborne obsessive that is serving as producer.

In a video announcing the project, McLoughlin reiterated his passion for Bloodborne and earnestly expressed a dedication to getting it right and making it authentic. This, Shankar noted, looks like a step in the right direction, but comes with some questions nevertheless.

"The real question is how much control is [Seán] actually going to be given and is this a marketing stunt? Because the traditional system is crashing and burning--everyone knows that--but the creator economy and the influencer economy is a growing ecosystem that is professionalizing.

"The cynic in me goes, 'Well, this is just an attempt to capitalize on the growing ecosystem,' just like a few years ago [when] everyone was rushing to give producing deals to athletes," Shanker said, likely referring to, among others, LeBron James's involvement in Space Jam: A New Legacy and Hustle, and, more recently, Steph Curry's collaboration with Sony on Goat.

"I don't know what this basketball player knows [about how to] help produce a movie. They were giving athletes [these] things, but again, it was performative. So there's a performative version of this and there's the actual version.

"We'll see, right? Because there's one thing to be a producer, there's another thing to be a producer, writer, showrunner, and have the complete corporate machine supporting your vision. Again, I know nothing about [the Bloodborne project]. I don't know Jacksepticeye. I wish him well, and I think that is a step in the right direction."

Sony Pictures' Bloodborne adaptation is co-financed by Lyrical Media, with PlayStation Production and Lyrical Animation serving as co-producers. Lyrical Media's animation division is reportedly focused on adult-oriented animated media, which suits the style and tone of Bloodborne. As of yet, it's unclear when the movie will be released and if it will appear in theaters or go straight to streaming services.

Devil May Cry Season 2, meanwhile, arrives on Netflix May 12, with Johnny Yong Bosch as Dante, Robbie Daymond as Vergil, and Scout Taylor-Compton as Lady.

!Game Informer News(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2026/09/02/3b1a8ce0/ninja-gaiden-III-swich-online.jpg.webp) The NES library of the Nintendo Switch Online Classics has three new titles: Ninja Gaiden III: The Ancient Ship of Doom, Ikari Warriors, and R.C. Pro-Am II. Each title is available now to subscribers. Ninja Gaiden III: The Ancient Ship of Doom was released in 1991 as the final NES entry for the series. Its inclusion means the entire classic Ninja Gaiden trilogy is now available to Switch Online subscribers. The same is true of the R.C. Pro-Am racing series, with its 1992 sequel now joining the original (which has been available on Switch Online since February 2024). The run-and-gun action game Ikari Warriors is the oldest of today's additions, launching in arcades in 1986 before being ported to NES in the U.S. in 1987. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Just Got A Surprise Free Update With 8-Player Split-Screen🍄 Nintendo Switch, Multi-platform

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Just Got A Surprise Free Update With 8-Player Split-Screen

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe(https://www.gamespot.com/games/mario-kart-8/) has been Nintendo's golden goose for several years, as it's the company's best-selling Switch game of all time(https://www.gamespot.com/gallery/best-selling-nintendo-switch-games-of-all-time/2900-5070/) and has received various updates over the years, becoming a feature-packed experience. Even with Mario Kart World aiming to usurp its position, Nintendo isn't done dropping new content into Mario Kart 8 yet, as the game just received a new eight-player split-screen mode out of nowhere on Switch 2. It's free to download, allows for up to eight players to share the screen locally, and it looks wild in action. Alongside the new mode that segments your TV like a slab of chocolate, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Version 4.0.0 also adds several more improvements that take advantage of the increased horsepower on Switch 2. In a nutshell, you're getting sharper graphics, CameraPlay support, and shorter load times in addition to smaller quality-of-life tweaks under the hood of the popular kart-racing game. Even player speed has been increased by a whopping coin--whatever that means. https://twitter.com/NintendoAmerica/status/2094968553728274749 But the expanded local split-screen is the real star of the show here, as not only can you strain your eyes while playing on TV, but you can also make your local optometrist happy by watching all those races unfold in handheld mode on the Switch 2. Considering just how much of an intensive load it is to render eight sessions in real time, the new multiplayer mode is a technical marvel to watch. This will likely keep Mario Kart 8 Deluxe at the top of the Nintendo food chain for a while yet. Mario Kart World has its charm, but as fans have pointed out, the anemic amount of content(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/surprise-mario-kart-world-update-ends-a-drought-of-new-content/) added since its launch last year has made it hard to root for. That drought might be coming to a temporary end, as with a rumored Nintendo Direct(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/a-september-10-nintendo-direct-is-looking-likely-thanks-to-just-dance/) supposedly arriving later this month, players are expecting Mario Kart World to get some sort of an update. If you're looking to grab it, a new Switch 2 + Mario Kart World bundle(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/two-new-switch-2-bundles-announced-just-before-price-hike/) ($550) launches in late September--albeit for $50 when compared to the original launch bundle. You Can Watch A Cow Play Eve Online Right Now

Earlier this summer, Fenris Creations (formerly CCP Games) released an update to its popular online spacefaring MMO called Cradle of War, which the community immediately abbreviated to "CoW." This shorthand apparently sparked a few ideas inside Fenris, and now an actual cow is livestreaming an Eve Online session(https://www.twitch.tv/fenriscreations) from Iceland. The cow, whose name is Valva and username is FC CapitalCowPilot, is manning a mining ship on a deep space mining operation. The team at Fenris Creations fitted its pen with "cow-proof" buttons, which when stepped on will perform certain in-game actions, while a voiceover host delivers cow facts to viewers of the livestream. https://bsky.app/profile/lotrlore.bsky.social/post/3muk2ibt4zk25 As of this writing, over 200 players have joined CapitalCowPilot's mining expedition, with over 4000 viewers watching along on Twitch as the cow moves around its pen. Fenris Creations has announced some community goals which can be unlocked during the stream, including new skins for ships and new updates for the Cradle of War expansion. The stream will run "for roughly 4 to 6 hours," as Fenris admits that it's "on the cow's time, she's not on ours." Valva has made quite an impression on the stream's chat, with some users demanding that the cow be left alone(https://bsky.app/profile/lotrlore.bsky.social/post/3muk24h3hwc25) while on its mining mission. The Cradle of War expansion's non-bovine additions include time-limited Military Campaigns, which let players complete tasks in order to advance their empire's goals, and a new area called Exordium specifically built to help onboard new players.
