If a third movie gets greenlit, and if McQuoid is tapped to return to direct, he said there is "so much to draw from" for telling more stories in the Mortal Kombat universe. "That's both overwhelming and really exciting," he said. "There's always a, 'What about that character?' It never really stops."
Mortal Kombat 2 made $40 million over its first weekend in North America and $23 million from international markets for a global start of $63 million. The numbers are below some expectations, and the film cost an estimated $80 million to make prior to marketing expenses.
The movie got mixed reviews, prompting one of its producers to criticize the critics before dialing things back and apologizing.
There are numerous more video game movies in development, including a new Resident Evil film in September and a Street Fighter movie in October. As for the Mortal Kombat game series, series developer NetherRealm hasn't announced any new games, but it's possible.
