Warren Spector's Thief Spiritual Successor Is Out Next Month, And It'll Only Cost Five Bucks

Overview & Key Takeaways

Outside of a VR game that launched last year, it looks like the Thief series is on ice for now. So what's the next best thing? It might be a spiritual successor in the form of Thick as Thieves from veteran producer and Deus Ex creator Warren Spector's studio, OtherSide Entertainment. A single-player and co-op game that's all about the art of the steal, it's one of several new titles launching in early access next month, and it'll cost just $5 to get in on the ground floor.

Set in an alternate timeline and taking place in the city of Kilcairn, Thick as Thieves will offer an introductory campaign set across two dynamic replayable maps when it launches on May 20. The game will feature 16 missions and six pieces of gear to collect, and OtherSide is aiming to develop additional content based on player feedback.

Billed as a stealth-action game where magic and technology have begun to collide, players will aim to join the Thieves Guild by taking part in high-stakes heists. Each of the two maps features a mix of hazards, ranging from steampunk surveillance systems to ghostly security guards haunting the corridors. Solo play is an option, but with a partner in crime, players can coordinate their efforts to distract and take down guards. Once you've gotten your loot and have successfully escaped, you can cash in and purchase new gear for your next burglary.

When it was originally revealed, Thick as Thieves focused on PvPvE gameplay and pitted thieves against the world and each other. Earlier this year, OtherSide confirmed that it was switching things up as it believed that players would have more fun playing as allies instead. The studio says that the shift to two-player co-op and single-player allowed it to strengthen the moment-to-moment action of Thick as Thieves.

The PC requirements are also quite modest, allowing the game to run on a wide range of systems.

Thick as Thieves PC requirements

Minimum

  • OS: Windows 10
  • Processor: Intel Core i5-4570 CPU @ 3.2GHz
  • Memory: 12GB RAM
  • Graphics: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 6GB
  • DirectX version 12
  • Storage: 10GB available space (SSD required)

Recommended

  • OS: Windows 11
  • Processor: Intel Core i7-8700 CPU @ 3.2GHz
  • Memory: 16GB RAM
  • Graphics: Nvidia GeForce GTX 2070 8GB
  • DirectX version 12
  • Storage: 10GB (SSD required)

If pilfering a highly guarded constable's station isn't your cup of tea, there are several other early access games to check out in May. Dead as Disco has rhythmic combat, Alabaster Dawn looks like a love letter to classic JRPGs, and Paralives looks set to offer a cozy life-sim experience.

High On Life Is Coming To VR, And Yes, You Can Stroke Your Weird Guns

High on Life(https://www.gamespot.com/games/high-on-life/) is coming to a new platform, as the irreverent first-person shooter with talking alien guns is getting a VR port. Announced during the VR Games Showcase, this new version of High on Life will launch for Meta Quest, PlayStation VR2, and SteamVR headsets in 2027. Originally developed by Squanch Games, the VR port of High on Life is being handled by Flat2VR Studios. The developer says that it is essentially rebuilding the game so that it can take advantage of VR tech, allowing players to interact with their talking--and opinionated--guns. The trailer below shows off some of these new features, like being able to stroke your weapons and feed them, and we bet they'll have something to say about that. "As we're adding all of these fun, manual VR interactions, it's really important that they make sense in gameplay and that they're maintaining the fast, fluid, and powerful feeling of combat," High on Life VR game director Emily O'Neil said in the reveal trailer. https://youtu.be/EQziBgQgrJI First released in 2022, High on Life saw players take on an alien cartel that invaded Earth and turned the populace into recreational drugs. As an up-and-coming bounty hunter armed with Gatliens--sentient guns that could be used to solve all kinds of problems--the game was a hit thanks to its weird sense of humor, fun gameplay, and an extremely Australian knife(https://high-on-life.fandom.com/wiki/Knifey) hellbent on stabbing everything. A sequel was released earlier this year, but reviews were lukewarm(https://www.gamespot.com/reviews/high-on-life-2-review-skate-n-gun/1900-6418463/), thanks in part to various technical issues that hampered its launch. VR fans can also look forward to a port of System Shock from Flat2VR Studios. Not much was revealed about this project, but the teaser trailer(https://youtu.be/w-baA9y0Ld0) suggested that the VR version will be based on the superb 2023 remake(https://www.gamespot.com/gallery/the-best-pc-games-of-2023/2900-4984/) of the cult-classic 1994 game.

Job Simulator Is Finally Giving Your VR Headset The Day Off

Job Simulator(https://www.gamespot.com/games/job-simulator/) has long been one of the best reasons to own a VR headset, and it might be bringing the glory days of working behind a counter--or cubicle hell--to a flat screen near you. Homeworld: Vast Reaches developer FarBridge has announced Job Simulator: Human Relations, which will see up to four players work together to complete tasks during their virtual eight-hour shift, like competing for resources or surviving natural disasters to appease their robot overlords. While you won't be playing as squishy humans in this co-op chaos game, you will be piloting several robots attempting to navigate the human workplace. The project is seeking crowdfunding to help make it a reality, as FarBridge has launched a Kickstarter campaign(https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/farbridge/job-simulator-human-relations) for it. If the studio successfully raises $150,000, the funds will be used to support the game's development. Backers can expect invites to private playtests, exclusive development, and VIP Discord access as they contribute to the game. An "employment package" starts at $10, and higher tiers will include a Steam copy of the completed game, in-game recognition, and an opportunity to design a JobBot face or corporate motivational poster. If stretch goals are met, the game will expand with additional disasters, customization options, jobs, and more. https://youtu.be/xu--JYZ6RIY?si=lDzCaaJ5htxPBkQL "Job Simulator has always been good at finding the joke in the everyday nonsense of work," FarBridge CEO and founder Patrick Curry said in a press statement. "With Job Simulator: Human Relations, we started wondering what that would look like if you had to deal with all of it alongside your friends. That idea opened up a lot of possibilities, and we don’t want to figure them all out behind closed doors. Kickstarter gives us a way to keep building the game with players involved from the beginning." !(https://www.gamespot.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Job-Simulator-Human-Relations-1.jpg?w=636) !(https://www.gamespot.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Job-Simulator-Human-Relations-2.jpg?w=636) !(https://www.gamespot.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Job-Simulator-Human-Relations-3.jpg?w=636) !(https://www.gamespot.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Job-Simulator-Human-Relations-4.jpg?w=636) !(https://www.gamespot.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Job-Simulator-Human-Relations-5.jpg?w=636) !(https://www.gamespot.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Job-Simulator-Human-Relations-6.jpg?w=636) !(https://www.gamespot.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Job-Simulator-Human-Relations-7.jpg?w=636) !(https://www.gamespot.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Job-Simulator-Human-Relations-8.jpg?w=636) !(https://www.gamespot.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Job-Simulator-Human-Relations-9.jpg?w=636) !(https://www.gamespot.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Job-Simulator-Human-Relations-10.jpg?w=636) !(https://www.gamespot.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Job-Simulator-Human-Relations-11.jpg?w=636) !(https://www.gamespot.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Job-Simulator-Human-Relations-12.jpg?w=636) !(https://www.gamespot.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Job-Simulator-Human-Relations-13.jpg?w=636) !(https://www.gamespot.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Job-Simulator-Human-Relations-14.jpg?w=636) !(https://www.gamespot.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Job-Simulator-Human-Relations-15.jpg?w=636) !(https://www.gamespot.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Job-Simulator-Human-Relations-16.jpg?w=636) !(https://www.gamespot.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Job-Simulator-Human-Relations-17.jpg?w=636) !(https://www.gamespot.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Job-Simulator-Human-Relations-18.jpg?w=636) !(https://www.gamespot.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Job-Simulator-Human-Relations-19.jpg?w=636) Owlchemy Labs CEOwl--no, really, that's their title--Andrew Eiche added that with Job Simulator turning 10 this year, the studio wanted to grow the cult-classic. FarBridge was a natural fit, given that they had already worked alongside Owlchemy on several projects and gelled with the developer's vibe. "They get our sense of humor, they understand how we build playful systems, and we trust them to bring that spirit to a new kind of experience for fans new and old," Eiche said. If you haven't played it yet, Job Simulator is set in 2050 and casts you as a living exhibit in the Museum of Human Employment. Aiming to recreate human working conditions, robots have gleaned information from social media posts, corporate training videos, and toxic productivity gurus, resulting in an inaccurate nine-to-five environment. Your role in all this? Do your job and hit production goals while avoiding the chaos erupting around you, all so that you can earn some sweet promotions and gameplay perks.
