When Will Beast of Reincarnation be Released?

Beast of Reincarnation will be released on August 4, 2026. The launch date for Game Freak's upcoming action RPG was confirmed with a release date announcement trailer on February 12.

Pre-Order Beast of Reincarnation

As of April 20, the Beast of Reincarnation pre-order is available at retailers like Best Buy. If you're wondering how much Beast of Reincarnation is, the answer is $60.

There's also a deluxe edition that costs $70 and includes the following bonus items:

  • Black and Brown Shiba skins for Koo
  • Oni's Hat for Emma
  • Big Dipper sword for Emma
  • 100,000 Amber (in-game currency)
  • A number of vegetable seedlings

Beast of Reincarnation Trailers

Game Freak has shared multiple Beast of Reincarnation trailers. The most notable one, however, was presented during this year's Xbox Developer Direct, which features a comprehensive explanation of its gameplay mechanics, a broad overview of the story that also provides insight on the Beast of Reincarnation characters, and plenty of gorgeous set pieces to marvel at.

In terms of reception, the gameplay overview has accrued 48,000 views, while the reveal trailer, released nine months ago, has 2 million views. This was shown during the Xbox Games Showcase 2025, featuring a presentation of the world with a largely cinematic trailer that also included gameplay snippets around combat and exploration.

Then, in February, Game Freak shared a "Release Date Announce" trailer, which is quite robust. The video provides more details about the story, locales, and even some characters. Of course, there are plenty of combat segments, sharing an early look at the abilities that will be at your disposal, as well as the enemies you'll face.

The most recent trailer was released on April 20, which is centered around pre-order bonuses. Moreover, it also provides an extended look at combat sequences and the story, as well as never-before-seen cutscenes. During the trailer, Emma is also making use of the pre-order bonus items, so you can see them on full display.

Those are all the trailers to date, but given the cadence, it's safe to assume that we can expect a few more before the game launches later this year.

Beast of Reincarnation Platforms

Beast of Reincarnation will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. It will also be part of the Xbox Game Pass catalog on day one.

If you're wondering if there's a Beast of Reincarnation Switch port on the way, well, it's tricky to say. When GameSpot asked Kota Furushima, who is the game director on the project, he said that "there's nothing to talk about at this time regarding the platform, other than what has already been announced."

Beast of Reincarnation Story, Setting, and Characters

Beast of Reincarnation introduces Emma, an exiled protagonist, and her warm, fuzzy companion, named Koo. Warmth, trust, and loneliness are the main driving feelings that the game wants to evoke, according to director Kota Furushima. The characters were born from that process.

Even though trailers indicate that the first encounter between the main characters is quite confrontational, the relationship between the protagonist and her dog grows as the story develops. The focus, taking inspiration and drawing from the existing knowledge of the studio working on an assortment of creatures, is to translate that into a protagonist and her companion traversing through a harsh and hostile setting.

Beast of Reincarnation takes place in post-apocalyptic Japan in the year 4026. Most of the human population was lost to the blight--parasitic plants that have overgrown across the globe, permeating through the ruins of human civilizations. The development team sees Japan as a perfect setting for a world suffocated in nature, blending mountain-surrounded landscape with elements of science fiction.

Emma has a special ability to hunt malefacts, which are creatures afflicted by the strange condition, and seal the blight inside their bodies. This, sadly, means that she is feared and lives isolated from the colonies where people dwell.

Thankfully, she meets Koo in the eastern region of Japan. The studio is being quite coy about what Koo's purpose is, and it's poised as one of the big mysteries of the story. As a pair, they're tasked with eliminating the Beast of Reincarnation that is threatening the capital.

There's a focus on plants as a primary motif, incorporating plants into the landscape, but also as part of the gameplay, with boss fights using vegetation and blooming flowers while fighting Emma and Koo. Malefacts are a good representation of this idea, posing an intersection, as these creatures are a fusion between plants and animals.

There's also the so-called Golems, which are androids. Humans transferred their souls into these mechanical bodies to survive the world's conditions. In the past 2000 years, they've grown quite savvy in terms of combat knowledge, but their souls have deteriorated, driving them mad.

Other characters are aiding Emma and Koo throughout the story. The pair is supported by Brad and Kagura, as well as a swordsperson called Kunai, who is accompanied by a malefact. If you're wondering about the backstories and intentions of these Beast of Reincarnation characters, it seems you'll have to wait until the game launches to find out, as Game Freak has been quite tight-lipped so far.

Beast of Reincarnation Gameplay

The Beast of Reincarnation gameplay is centered around the premise of being a "one-person-one-dog RPG," as Game Freak calls it. As is immediately apparent from trailers and screenshots alone, this action RPG is a visceral experience in a similar vein to the ever-growing wave of soulslike games.

The main objective is to defeat powerful entities corrupted by the blight, known as Nushi, and absorb their power to grow stronger. In terms of exploration, you can expect harsh environments that require dynamic movements to navigate. This includes vine-like hair that Emma can manipulate at will, creating pole-like vines to double jump, and vine paths to get across platforms and run faster on them.

But her abilities don't stop there. There's a particular synergy between Emma and Koo that comes into play during combat. For example, when Emma parries an attack, power builds up in Koo, allowing him to unleash powerful techniques called Blooming Arts. These are performed by pressing a specific combination of button prompts, similarly to how some attacks are performed in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.

The special techniques range from stunning a group of enemies with vines, exposing them to a flurry of attacks, or creating a large spider lily to leap onto and perform a downward attack. Time can slow down when selecting a technique, similarly to selecting a command to activate in a turn-based RPG, giving you some time to think.

Emma and Koo each have a skill tree. They're each designed to complement and influence the other character's actions. As the bond between the pair increases, the number of skills they can equip grows, which allows for experimenting with different loadouts and synergies.

These loadouts pair well with another mechanic that involves Spirit Stones that allow you to stack katana effects that trigger when Emma performs a parry. It's also possible to focus primarily on ranged weapons, or even opt for stealth, commanding Koo to take the lead during combat instead. Beast of Reincarnation seems to offer many customization options to tailor the experience to your own personal style when approaching combat encounters.

Lastly, there are three difficulty settings. Aside from the standard one, there's a hard mode for an extra challenge, and story mode, having a much more forgiving parry window. Plus, enemy damage gets reduced. If you're not used to the intensity of an action RPG, the latter could be a great option to get acclimated.

Beast of Reincarnation Development News

Beast of Reincarnation was announced in June 2025 with a reveal trailer. Since then, Game Freak has shown the game a couple of times, providing a gameplay overview and some more story and combat snippets when announcing the release date in February of this year.

The game's conception, however, took place six years ago. The idea was pitched by the game's director, Kota Furushima, as part of Game Freak's own initiative called "Gear Project," which is designed to consider and then develop ideas to create "new experiences unlike anything before."

Speaking to Polygon, Furushima said that a small internal team is leading the project, handling “creative direction, production leadership, technical problem-solving, and overall project management.” The actual development is being done by “several dozen trusted external partners,” but Game Freak is still overseeing the entire project.

"I would say that every single thing about putting this game together has been a challenge," Beast of Reincarnation's director told GameSpot. "It's something new, it's been something we've really been striving for. But it's very different from other titles I've worked on. It's hard to even compare it, in that sense."

Of course, the project is quite a departure from the Game Freak catalog we've grown used to. Furushima understands the importance Beast of Reincarnation has for the company, showcasing an intention to get off the beaten path and face a different challenge. But the game is also of personal importance for the director himself.

"I think, as a creator, it's really important to me, too. The idea of kind of having this concept of it at first then gradually seeing it take shape and take form--it's really exciting," Furushima told GameSpot. "It's something that I find very motivating. Game Freak will continue to do new and exciting things, I presume. It's very important to the company. But it's also very important to me as a creator, again, to see kind of my idea--my baby--take shape in the real world."

Before HBO’s The Last Of Us, An Entirely Different Adaptation Was Proposed

Naughty Dog's first effort to adapt The Last of Us for the screen was not as an HBO TV show, but a movie, a fact that recently began doing the rounds again on social media. Like with many Hollywood productions, The Last of Us had a tumultuous, long development period as a movie before it was ultimately abandoned in favor of what is now a hit series. While not everyone agrees with the creative departures from the source material(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/the-last-of-us-writer-expecting-furor-over-season-2/1100-6515962/) for the TV series on HBO, it's undeniably a success and one of HBO's biggest hits lately. Let's look back at how The Last of Us originated as a movie and run through the key developments that led to it becoming a TV show. The original movie pitch People across X recently discovered a post from Sony Pictures in 2014(https://x.com/sonypictures/status/492757891229552641?s=46) declaring that The Last of Us was "soon to be a major motion picture." This was a real, studio-sponsored image, not a fan mock-up. There was officially produced key art, showing Ellie wielding a knife. There was a "secret panel" at San Diego Comic-Con that year featuring director Sam Raimi, who was originally attached to produce the movie, having already had huge success at Sony with his Spider-Man films. https://twitter.com/sonypictures/status/492757891229552641?s=46 That The Last of Us was originally going to be a movie is not surprising given how many video game movies came before it and how many have been released since (with varying degrees of success). This was a year after The Last of Us came out in 2013. It was a hot property, as the game was a critical and a commercial success for Naughty Dog and Sony. With Sony also owning and operating its own film studio, all the synergies were there for Sony to make a Last of Us film. Neil Druckmann, who directed The Last of Us game, confirmed in 2014 that the movie would adapt the story of The Last of Us(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/another-reason-why-the-last-of-us-movie-is-sounding-good/1100-6418282/), as opposed to branching off in some other way. At the time, Druckmann said the movie would "take into account the unique properties of film,"(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/another-reason-why-the-last-of-us-movie-is-sounding-good/1100-6418282/) but he stressed it was early days and the team hadn't yet mapped out how it would condense the game's story into a two-hour film. In 2015, Druckmann confirmed he had written a second draft of the movie's script, which he said contained "pretty big changes"(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/the-last-of-us-movie-has-pretty-big-changes-but-st/1100-6424898/) from the source material. It was also at this time that Druckmann said a table read had already taken place with "a bunch of actors," though he did not name any outright. Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams was said to be a frontrunner to play Ellie(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/the-last-of-us-movie-arya-stark-actress-is-frontru/1100-6423949/), and many people said that casting was perfect. Williams herself confirmed she met with Druckmann and Raimi about it, but remarked at the time that there was no script or director at that point. Williams, who was 17 at the time, also joked at the time that she hoped Sony would make the movie quickly because, "If they make it in 30 years, they can't have a 40-year-old Ellie." Kaitlyn Dever was also considered for the role of Ellie in the film(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/maisie-williams-and-kaitlyn-dever-considered-for-canceled-tlou-movie/1100-6510290/), and, spoiler alert: Dever would go on to play Ellie's adversary, Abby, in the HBO TV show. Development Hell Hollywood productions can take a lot of time to come together, and when the production process goes on for an extended period of time, that's known as "Development Hell." The Last of Us movie was yet another example of this unfortunate phenomenon. In 2016, Druckmann said the movie hadn't progressed for "over a year" at that point(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/the-last-of-us-movie-development-hasnt-progressed/1100-6437330/). "It kind of entered development hell like these things tend to do," he said. The movie also never had a director signed on, nor was there a cast or a release date. !(https://www.gamespot.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/Screenshot-2026-09-03-at-11.58.58-AM.png?w=636) The Last of Us This wouldn't be the last time a Naughty Dog film project was subject to development hell, as the Uncharted movie is a very infamous example of this(https://www.gamespot.com/gallery/uncharted-movie-development-hell-a-timeline-of-all/2900-3354/), but that did eventually come together for release in 2022 after a decade of development. The Last of Us "would have been awful" as a movie Druckmann said in an interview with Sacred Symbols(https://x.com/GiannissTape/status/2094631003218202748) that movie executives told him to "make it bigger, make it more like World War Z," and he pushed back against this. "Go make World War Z. Why make The Last of Us? The Last of Us is not that," he said. Conversely, Druckmann said HBO boss Casey Bloys told him, "'Do as much action as you need to, and no more. Do as much violence as you need to, and no more. Here, we sell drama.'" Druckmann said he got the opposite notes when The Last of Us was envisioned as a feature film. It's not a stretch to imagine this is part of the reason why Naughty Dog opted for a TV show instead of a film, in addition to there being a more supportive and understanding team at HBO to produce and back the show. Druckmann also said HBO approached the source material with "such reverence and artistry," ensuring Naughty Dog would be involved in the process too. This is not always the case, of course, as the Baldur's Gate TV series at HBO does not involve Larian Studios(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/baldurs-gate-3-is-getting-an-hbo-series-and-you-can-probably-guess-whos-writing-it/1100-6537976/). Druckmann also mentioned that HBO was supportive of the many changes to the source material that Druckmann and writer/showrunner Craig Mazin made. Appearing on Logically Speaking(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jBesgXilHbk) in 2024, Druckmann said the movie version of The Last of Us "would have been awful." He said, "It would have been one of those bad adaptations had we finished that one." "You have two hours, max, and the feedback I got was, 'This will lead it down a bad path,'" he added. In a recent interview with GamesBeat(https://gamesbeat.com/how-k-id-is-bringing-compliance-into-the-ai-development-stack-gamesbeat-summit-recap/), Druckmann said he changed his mind about how to approach such projects. Whereas in 2014 he said The Last of Us movie would be an adaptation of the game, in 2016, he said Naughty Dog had "evolved our feelings" about adaptations. "As time goes on, we are not excited by a direct adaptation of a story for a game into a movie,” Druckmann said. “We have told that story well, cinematically. The idea for The Last of Us film was to be a direct adaptation. I don’t want that movie to be made." !(https://www.gamespot.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/Screenshot-2026-09-03-at-11.57.50-AM.png?w=636) Bella Ramsey as Ellie. Druckmann indeed got his wish, and that movie was never made. The TV series with HBO, meanwhile, premiered in January 2023, and its first season--starring Bella Ramsey as Ellie and Pedro Pascal as Joel--was a huge success in terms of critical reception and viewership numbers. A second season aired in 2025, and was similarly successful, though not quite to the same degree. A third--and potentially final(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/is-the-last-of-us-season-3-the-final-season-it-certainly-seems-that-way-hbo-boss-says/1100-6537812/)--season is in the works now, but Druckmann dropped out(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/the-last-of-us-game-co-creator-neil-druckmann-steps-down-from-the-hit-hbo-series/1100-6532923/) to focus on Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet and other projects at Naughty Dog (maybe The Last of Us 3?(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/the-last-of-us-3-release-date-trailer-story/1100-6531075/)).
