Game Informer News

Apparently not to be outdone by PlayStation airing back-to-back State of Play presentations this week, Nintendo has announced two Direct broadcasts scheduled for next week. This includes a traditional Nintendo Direct and a special Direct celebrating The Legend of Zelda’s 40th anniversary.

The news was first announced on the Nintendo Today app. On Tuesday, September 8, The Legend of Zelda: 40th Anniversary Direct airs at 7:00 a.m. PT/10:00 a.m. ET. It will last approximately 30 minutes. Nintendo has not detailed what announcements to expect, but it's fair to assume updates on The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake and the live-action film The Legend of Zelda are on the table.

The next day, Wednesday, September 9, a standard Nintendo Direct airs at 7:00 a.m. PT/10:00 a.m. ET. This presentation will run for roughly 45 minutes. It’s anyone’s guess as to what to expect. Announced upcoming Nintendo first-party/Switch-exclusive projects, other than the aforementioned Ocarina of Time, include Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave, which launches on September 17, as well as Xenoblade Genesis and Pokémon Winds and Waves, both of which arrive next year. Nintendo has a penchant for announcing major projects with little to no prior hints or leaks, so it's fair to expect just about anything could be showcased next week.

LEGO PlayStation Design Revealed

!Game Informer News(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2026/09/03/e63b1d48/lego01.jpg.webp) Today’s State of Play revealed a new partnership between the brick-building toy makers at LEGO and the PlayStation brand. Following on the heels of other video game console models like the NES(https://gameinformer.com/2020/07/13/lego-teases-nes-building-kit-images-of-the-set-immediately-leak), Game Boy(https://gameinformer.com/2025/07/24/a-lego-game-boy-replica-comes-out-this-october), and Sega Genesis(https://www.lego.com/en-us/product/sega-genesis-console-40926), the new LEGO PlayStation looks like a nostalgic throwback focused on celebrating the origins of the original 1994 design. The LEGO PlayStation includes several features and gimmicks that should bring a smile to the face of gamers who recall that mid-'90s console. The set includes both an opening button, a light, and a controller that can be plugged into the larger set. Borrowing the idea from other successful brick-built recreation sets, the LEGO PlayStation also includes two hidden dioramas that nod to early successes for the PlayStation brand – one focused on Ape Escape and the other on Gran Turismo. As of the State of Play airing, LEGO hadn’t revealed too much more. However, in a subsequent posting to the LEGO official site(https://www.lego.com/en-us/product/playstation-72306), we learned that the piece feature 1911 pieces, is set to release on October 4, and will retail for $179.99. !Game Informer News(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2026/09/03/9bacee7e/lego02.jpg.webp)

Nintendo Reveals Digital Sales Up 90% Compared To Last Year, Switch 2 Units Top 23 Million, And More

!Game Informer News(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2025/04/02/12807291/switch2preorder.jpg.webp) Nintendo has released its latest financial earnings report(https://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/pdf/2026/260806e.pdf), covering the first quarter of the fiscal year, which encompasses April through June 2026. In it, the company has revealed that digital sales revenue is up 90% year-over-year, that the Switch 2 sold nearly 4 million units in those three months, and that, unsurprisingly, Mario Kart World(https://gameinformer.com/product/mario-kart-world) continues to be the best-selling game on the console. According to Nintendo, digital sales totaled 132.7 billion yen (or roughly $837 million), up 90% year-on-year, "mainly due to an increase in sales of downloadable versions of packaged software." This figure arrives just weeks after Sony announced it will stop manufacturing discs for PlayStation games in 2028(https://gameinformer.com/2026/07/01/playstation-will-cease-production-of-physical-discs-for-new-games-in-january-2028), sparking an uproar among players who want to purchase physical copies. With rumors swirling that Xbox may follow suit, Nintendo could be the last of the Big Three console makers to release its games in a physical format (though players argue whether Nintendo's current go-to solution for physical releases, Game-Key Cards, is any different from a digital download key). Elsewhere in the company's earnings report, it states the "Nintendo Switch 2 hardware maintained strong sales momentum, with sales totaling 3.82 million units," bringing the total up to 23.68 million. Software units total 58.17 million. Looking at Switch 2 software, the company says Yoshi and the Mysterious Book(https://gameinformer.com/review/yoshi-and-the-mysterious-book/low-stakes-charm), Star Fox(https://gameinformer.com/review/star-fox-2026/mission-complete), and Pokemon Pokopia(https://gameinformer.com/review/pokemon-pokopia/a-pleasant-paradise) "sold well" but stops short of giving exact numbers for this fiscal quarter. Nintendo did reveal that Switch 2 software sales totaled 9.46 million during this latest fiscal quarter, adding that Switch software in the form of Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream(https://gameinformer.com/review/tomodachi-life-living-the-dream/you-get-what-you-give) reached 7.94 million units. As a result of these earnings, Nintendo says it is not making changes to its original financial forecast for the fiscal year. "Nintendo Switch 2 is now in its second year since launch in June 2025 and sales continue to be strong," the report reads. "We aim to maintain momentum for the hardware and see it delivered together with software into the hands of a wide range of consumers." The company highlights recent releases and upcoming launches, including Splatoon Raiders (launched in July) and Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave, Nintendo Switch Sports Resort, and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (the remake) coming throughout the rest of the year. To close out this look at Nintendo's latest fiscal report, here are the sales numbers(https://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/en/finance/software/index.html) for various Switch 2 and Switch games released so far (in total): - Mario Kart World: 15.39 million units – Our Review(https://gameinformer.com/review/mario-kart-world/roam-if-you-want-to) - Donkey Kong Bananza: 4.78 million units – Our Review(https://gameinformer.com/review/donkey-kong-bananza/breaking-through-to-something-new) - Pokemon Legends: Z-A – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition: 3.99 million units – Our Review(https://gameinformer.com/review/pokemon-legends-z-a/maintaining-rank) - Pokemon Pokopia: 3.68 million units – Our Review(https://gameinformer.com/review/pokemon-pokopia/a-pleasant-paradise) - Kirby Air Riders: 1.90 million units – Our Review(https://gameinformer.com/review/kirby-air-riders/star-ships-were-meant-to-fly) - Super Mario Party Jamboree – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition: 1.15 million units – Our Review(https://gameinformer.com/review/super-mario-party-jamboree-nintendo-switch-2-edition-jamboree-tv/solid-base-with-tepid) Do any of these numbers surprise you?
