Rust's New Force Wipe Update Includes Major Game Changes

Polygon RSS FeedAshely Claudino3 min read(about 5 hours ago)

Overview & Key Takeaways

September's force wipe is now live, and it is time for players to explore all the new features and changes that have been made to Rust this month.

It's the first Thursday of September, which means it's the best day of the month for Rust players — force wipe. This force wipe update has been titled "Breach and Clear," as it's all about breaking obstacles and destroying lootable structures. Over a hundred minor updates have been made to improve the overall state of the game, and dozens of major changes have also been applied, many of them in an attempt to balance the game for solo players who have to face zergs and large clans.

Every month, hundreds of players become prim-locked for the first few days of the wipe, as clans take over monuments and grab all available blueprints. They then have to wait for these clans to sell blueprints in their shops to finally get a Tier 2 workbench and start crafting proper weapons. To slow down their progression, Facepunch has added monument blockers to red keycard puzzle rooms. While some are weaker and can be broken with a melee weapon, others require several jackhammers to destroy. The blockers' upkeep lasts 24 hours, after which they begin to decay. This won't significantly impede progression, but it's bound to make the first day or so a bit more interesting.

Another thing that groups will have to worry about is increased Tool Cupboard (TC) upkeep based on the number of players in the base. There is no tax for bases with only four players. If there are six players, upkeep increases by 2%, and this number increases by 4% for each additional player. The maximum upkeep tax is 300%. To determine upkeep tax, the TC counts players authorized on the TC and code locks (including guest codes). It also counts players who have been deauthorized on the TC and code locks in the last 24 hours to prevent teams from bypassing the fee. On the bright side, clan ore farmers should have an easier time managing upkeep, as high quality metal ore nodes and harvestables can now be found and broken for HQM ore.

The Power Trip update that went live in August made it so players had to power up the Power Plant in order to bring electricity to the entire island. To make this feature even more important, electricity across the island is now required for Outpost drones to pick up items from players' shops.

These are the most important features in September's update. However, minor changes and additions have also been made, and some are worth noting. Fans can read the full patch notes in September's devblog. Here are a few changes that stand out:

  • New Tier 1 healing item, Medical Honey Bandage, heals more than Bandage and less than Medical Syringe. Requires honey to craft.
  • Attack helicopter armor now detaches as damage is dealt to it.
  • Heavy Plate Jacket and Pants now make noise when moving. Heavy Plate Helmet suppresses noise.
  • Certain pie buffs have been increased. Recipes have been tweaked.
  • Large Medkit now removes radiation

Lastly, Rust's weekly store has been updated with an array of items. On top of this, the highly anticipated Crystal Assault Rifle DLC has been added to the item store. This beautiful translucent weapon comes in five different colors (diamond, ruby, pink diamond, emerald, and sapphire) and can be purchased on Steam for $6.99.

Xbox Announces Monthly Hour Limits To Cloud Gaming Are Coming In November

!Game Informer News(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2026/09/03/c3df146d/xbox-cloud-gaming-1.jpg.webp) Xbox has announced a major change to its cloud gaming service, which is included in Xbox Game Pass subscriptions. Starting in November, Game Pass plans will now have limits on the number of hours players can spend cloud gaming based on their subscription tier. Xbox Cloud Gaming launched in 2020(https://gameinformer.com/2020/09/14/xbox-cloud-gaming-launches-tomorrow-with-more-than-150-games) and allows users to stream select games over the internet to supported mobile devices, letting them enjoy console-quality experiences on the go. There has never been a limit to using the feature, but this will soon change according to an Xbox Wire Post(https://news.xbox.com/en-us/2026/09/03/xbox-cloud-gaming-changes/). In November, the number of cloud gaming hours allotted each month will be as follows: - Game Pass Ultimate: 15 hours - Game Pass Premium: 10 hours - Game Pass Essential: 5 hours “Today, eligible Game Pass subscribers can stream without these monthly hour limits,” reads Xbox’s post. “We recognize that introducing limits is a meaningful change, particularly for players who regularly spend more time gaming through the cloud. We expect this upcoming change to impact 4% of Game Pass subscribers.” Xbox adds that once players use up the hours of cloud gaming play time included in their monthly subscription, they can purchase additional hours. This pricing has not been detailed yet, and will vary by market. Additionally, players can now use cloud gaming without subscribing to Game Pass by purchasing cloud playtime hours à la carte to stream games on supported devices. Xbox promises to provide information on pricing for playtime hours, the eligible games, how to check remaining hours, and more in November. !Game Informer News(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2026/09/03/ff57b959/xbox-cloud-playtime-hours.jpg.webp) As for why Xbox is making this change, it states, “We’re introducing this model because the cost of providing cloud gaming grows as more people use it and play for longer. Moving to monthly limits allows us to keep offering the service while continuing to invest in its reliability and performance. We understand that for some players the practical result is a higher cost.” This move is the latest big change in a year full of them for Xbox. Following the appointment of current CEO Asha Sharma(https://gameinformer.com/2026/02/20/phil-spencer-is-retiring-xbox-president-sarah-bond-is-leaving-and-microsofts-coreai-head) in February, the company has undergone a massive restructuring(https://gameinformer.com/2026/07/06/xbox-parts-ways-with-five-studios-over-3000-layoffs-announced), resulting in 3,000 layoffs across the entire Xbox division and the splitting off of five internal development studios. Xbox Game Pass subscriptions dropped in price(https://gameinformer.com/2026/04/21/xbox-drops-prices-for-game-pass-ultimate-and-pc-game-pass-but-new-call-of-duty-games) in response to a previous hike, but Xbox consoles had another price increase(https://gameinformer.com/2026/06/25/xbox-consoles-are-getting-another-price-increase-in-august) in the past month. Most recently, Xbox announced a program letting players use their physical game discs to claim entitlement to their digital counterparts(https://gameinformer.com/2026/08/26/xbox-announces-disc-to-digital-program-letting-players-use-physical-games-to-claim-their). These big shifts come as Xbox prepares its next-generation console, Project Helix(https://gameinformer.com/2026/03/12/xbox-shares-new-hardware-details-for-next-generation-console-project-helix).
