September.2026 Is Officially the Busiest Month in Years for Millions of Gamers

Polygon RSS FeedGiovanni Colantonio4 min read(about 5 hours ago)

Overview & Key Takeaways

September 2026 has become one of the busiest gaming months in years, between Wolverine, Control Resonant, and a bazillion more games.

It’s been the biggest mystery of the year: What video game publisher will have the guts to go up against Grand Theft Auto 6 this November? An empty fall release date schedule left some major questions as players waited to see where anticipated games like Marvel’s Wolverine and Control Resonant would land. June’s Summer Game Fest, Xbox Games Showcase, and PlayStation State of Play offered an early answer to that question: No one. Months later, November still remains wide open for GTA 6 as it appears that every major holiday video game will instead try to launch in September. Good luck to everyone on both sides of the controller, because September is about to be a 200 car pile-up.

Here are all the major new video games coming out in September 2026:

  • Crimson Moon (Sept. 1)
  • Blood of the Dawnwalker (Sept. 3)
  • Orbitals (Sept. 3)
  • Onimusha: Way of the Sword (Sept. 4)
  • Valheim 1.0 (Sept. 9)
  • Wardogs (early access begins Sept. 10)
  • Marvel's Wolverine (Sept. 15)
  • Woodo (Sept. 16)
  • Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave (Sept. 17)
  • Control Resonant (Sept. 24)
  • Silent Hill: Townfall (Sept. 24)
  • Minecraft Dungeons 2 (Sept. 29)
  • Nivalis Nights (Sept. 29)
  • Toem 2 (Sept. 29)

Prior to Tuesday's State of Play stream, we knew that a handful of major games were already planting their flag in September. Blood of the Dawnwalker recently announced a Sept. 3 launch. (Phantom Blade Zero had Sept. 9 locked down for a while before it was delayed to October.) The heavy hitters will continue on Sept. 15, which Sony has now claimed for Marvel’s Wolverine. Things will really heat up the following week, though. Tuesday's State of Play stream revealed that Control Resonant will launch on Sept. 24, the same day as Silent Hill Townfall. Onimusha: Way of the Sword will drop one day later on Sept. 25. That’s three of the year’s most anticipated games landing in a two-day span.

Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve just narrowly avoided that disaster with an Oct. 2 release date, but it’s still flying too close for comfort. Deluxe Edition holders will get access to it on Sept. 28, so I’m counting that as a September release. The only game that seemed to get away from the dogpile was Rayman Legends Retold, but not by much: It will release on Oct. 1, which, look, if five bucks is eight bucks, that's September.

That’s just scratching the surface, as a few other games are stuck in that crossfire, too. Mewgenics gets its console release on Sept. 8, Dune: Awakening will come to PS5 on Sept. 22 with new content, and RPG-heads have Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter waiting for them on Sept. 17 (not to mention the other two Legends of Heroes games on Sept. 10, Trails from Zero and Trails to Azure).

At this point, I’m starting to wonder if some of these games would stand a better chance in and around November. Does Silent Hill: Townfall really have a significant enough audience crossover with Grand Theft Auto that it couldn’t launch a few weeks before it in time for Halloween? Would something like Rayman Legends Retold do just fine in early December considering that it’s targeting kids? Publishers are undoubtedly going to be asking questions like this when the dust clears. This fall is going to be one messy game of musical chairs — and it's only just begun.

GTA 6 Skipping PC At Launch And Having No Online Right Away Is Good, Helldivers Boss Says

The CEO of Helldivers studio Arrowhead Game Studios has commented on the upcoming launch of GTA 6(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/gta-6-leaks-a-timeline-of-the-events-so-far/), saying he's happy there will be no PC version or online mode at launch, because that will help Helldivers 2 "keep crushing it." In a statement to press, Sham Jorjani said Rockstar makes "ridiculous, high-effort stuff, and it's awesome that games like this get made." He said he's selfishly happy that the game won't be on PC at launch, nor will there be an online mode right away. "It means Helldivers 2 gets to keep crushing it in our own space, and is also why it won’t be the all consuming behemoth everyone’s worried about," he said. Rockstar has confirmed GTA 6 will launch on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, but the developer has not said a word about a possible PC edition. Additionally, Rockstar has said GTA 6 is a "single-player experience," but the company has not confirmed outright that there won't be an online mode at launch. It's expected Rockstar will evolve GTA Online in some form for GTA 6(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/with-gta-6-online-rockstar-is-deciding-who-to-make-mad/), but we don't know anything about that yet. With GTA 5, the game launched first on console before later coming to PC. For GTA 6, it's expected the game will also eventually come to PC. Additionally, it won't be unprecedented if GTA 6 launches with no online mode, as GTA 5 also launched without one. Jorjani went on to say Rockstar has "the brand power to confidently take their time and run their classic play," as opposed to chasing trends and pivoting like some other developers do. "They have the confidence and freedom to spend a decade doing things the old-school way because they know the core game will deliver. It’s going to raise the bar for sure," he said. The "Extended Look" for GTA 6(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/gta-6-netflix-trailers-beefy-runtime-revealed-footage-captured-on-ps5/) aired today, August 27, on Netflix. For more, be sure to read GameSpot’s breakdown ofhow to watch and what to expect from the GTA 6 Extended Look event(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/gta-6-extended-look-how-to-watch-what-to-expect-and-more/). The Netflix event comes after GTA 6 has suffered numerous, significant gameplay leaks. Rockstar reacted to the scandal, saying the leaks are “heartbreaking” for the developers(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/rockstar-finally-comments-on-all-those-gta-6-leaks-heartbreaking-for-our-team/). GTA 6 launches on November 19 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. It’s coming to market with an incredible amount of hype behind it, in part because fans have been waiting 13 years for the sequel to GTA 5(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/the-biggest-gaming-stories-that-happened-since-gta-5-came-out-13-years-ago/).

The Blood Of Dawnwalker Devs Heard Your 60fps Requests And Have Good News For Console Players🖥 PlayStation, Xbox, PC, Multi-platform

The Blood Of Dawnwalker Devs Heard Your 60fps Requests And Have Good News For Console Players

If you wanted to play The Blood of Dawnwalker(https://www.gamespot.com/games/the-blood-of-dawnwalker/) at 60fps, you'd originally need to get the PC version and hope your rig was up to scratch(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/the-biggest-surprise-about-the-blood-of-dawnwalker-is-how-little-ram-it-needs/). Developer Rebel Wolves didn't initially list a 60fps mode for Xbox Series X, PS5, and PS5 Pro when it recently released a quick look at the graphical modes for those consoles, but the developer says it will now be added via a day-one patch when the game launches in September. "Performance mode was already in the works, but it was still being tested. We simply weren’t ready to promise it yet," Rebel Wolves wrote(https://x.com/DawnwalkerGame/status/2091812822082580778) on its The Blood of Dawnwalker X account. "We heard your feedback. It was clear how much this mattered to many of you, so we focused on finishing the next round of tests. Those results gave us the confidence we needed to confirm Performance Mode for Day one." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yLMUp83HZKE The Blood of Dawnwalker will have three modes to choose from on Xbox Series X, PS5, and PS5 Pro: Performance targets 60fps, Balanced targets 40fps, and Quality targets 30fps. Xbox Series S owners are only getting one mode, which targets 30fps on the lower-spec hardware. Rebel Wolves hasn't detailed the major differences between the modes either, but typically, Performance mode prioritizes a higher, smoother frame rate while cutting back on fancier lighting effects, simpler particle effects, and less detail compared to Quality mode. Balanced mode attempts to have the best of both worlds while targeting 40fps, while the PS5 Pro has proven to be a 4K 60fps powerhouse(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/ps5-pros-upgraded-pssr-is-rolling-out-today-here-are-the-first-games-getting-it/1100-6538811/) after the rollout of an upgraded PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/ps5-pro-visual-upgrade-incoming-with-new-pssr-update/1100-6538470/) earlier this year. Out on September 3, The Blood of Dawnwalker is the debut game from Rebel Wolves, a studio that features several former Witcher and Cyberpunk 2077 developers(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/witcher-3-director-says-his-vampire-game-couldnt-be-made-at-cd-projekt-red-or-another-established-studio/1100-6539674/) in its roster, including The Witcher 3 game director Konrad Tomaszkiewicz. Set in a dark medieval world full of vampires and grim fantasy, players will have to grapple with the consequences of their actions as they build up power for a final showdown against the vampire lord Brencis. "Whether you're talking to your best friend, working to bandage an injured comrade, or battling opponents to save your father's life, when the hunger takes hold, your actions may suddenly be out of your control. Dawnwalker is a game all about making you live with the consequences," Phil Hornshaw wrote in GameSpot's The Blood of Dawnwalker preview(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/in-the-blood-of-dawnwalkers-vampire-story-death-is-not-always-the-end/).
