Switch 2 Officially Has 2 Exclusive GOTY Contenders In September 2026

Overview & Key Takeaways

Nintendo Switch 2 has a busy month ahead with Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave, Orbitals, Onimusha: Way of the Sword, and more

The video game industry explodes into life this September, with a deluge of exciting new releases as publishers hustle to release their titles well clear of the oncoming juggernaut that is Grand Theft Auto 6. Even though that game is not coming to Switch 2, it's no different on Nintendo's platform, which will see perhaps its busiest release month since launch.

In September, Switch 2 gets two very tasty exclusives โ€” one of them a hotly anticipated new entry in a fan-favorite Nintendo franchise. There are also three AAA third-party games releasing day one on Switch 2, and one sequel to a much-loved indie.

The six games listed below are just the most anticipated all-new releases, too. A ton of cool ports hit Switch 2 in September 2, including Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, survival games Valheim and RuneScape: Dragonwilds, action games Hell is Us and Shinobi: Art of Vengeance, and classic RPG with very long title Dragon Quest 11 S: Echoes of an Elusive Age โ€” Definitive Edition*.*

1 Moonlighter 2: The Endless Vault

Release date: Sep. 2

2018's Moonlighter is a much-loved indie that combines a cozy shopkeeping game with a Zelda-inspired dungeon-crawler. By night, you explore dungeons and collect materials to craft and sell in your shop during the daytime. For this new sequel, developer Digital Sun moves from a 2D presentation to a 3D isometric view, and draws heavy inspiration from Hades in its action-roguelite gameplay.

2 Orbitals

Release date: Sep. 3

Exclusive games from developers outside Nintendo's first-party network are rare on Switch 2 โ€” heck, they're rare on any platform โ€” and here's a particularly exciting example from Tokyo-based developer Shapefarm and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 publisher Kepler Interactive. Orbitals is a co-op puzzle-platforming adventure for two players in the vein of Hazelight's It Takes Two and Split Fiction. It's also a super stylish and charming retro tribute to the more optimistic, all-ages sci-fi anime of the 1980s, including French-produced series like Ulysses 31. The fidelity of the art and animation style has to be seen to be believed, even in motion.

3 Onimusha: Way of the Sword

Release date: Sep. 4

Capcom continues its full-throated support for the Switch 2 with yet another day-one release of a AAA cross-platform game. This time, it's the first mainline entry in the studio's historical fantasy action-adventure series in 20 years. Way of the Sword โ€” which Capcom says is not a Soulslike โ€” is focused firmly on the swordplay, with a sophisticated combat system for taking on rival swordsmen as well as the demons and other occult threats that haunt Edo-period Kyoto.

4 Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave

Release date: Sep. 17

Nintendo and Intelligent Systems' cult tactical RPG series returns, and there's hope that Fortune's Weave will deliver the excellence the series is capable of on both story and gameplay fronts for the first time since 2013 series highlight Awakening. Since then, Three Houses has massively expanded the popularity of Fire Emblem, so the sky's the limit for Fortune's Weave, which tells the story of four protagonists competing for glory at a heroic arena tournament. Could this be a genuine Game of the Year contender?

5 EA Sports FC 27

Release date: Sep. 25

EA's gargantuan soccer series returns, still without FIFA branding, but benefiting nevertheless from the huge swell of interest in the sport after the 2026 World Cup. This new edition introduces The Grounds, a street-styled social football hub where you can customize and level up your player and engage in kickabouts, minigames, and club matches. Also, Ted Lasso and AFC Richmond are back!

6 Minecraft Dungeons 2

Release date: Sep. 29

Minecraft's Diablo-lite series returns โ€” a co-op dungeon crawler for up to four players with loads of mobs and loot. Everything's much the same as the 2020 original but a bit better, including the art style, a jump ability, and, most importantly for a game like this, the loot. Armor is now split into four individual pieces (as in Minecraft proper) and there's a new talisman slot, too, which means loads more stat-boosting affixes. Yum.

A September 10 Nintendo Direct Is Looking Likely Thanks To Just Dance

Fans eager to see what Nintendo is cooking up for the 2026 holiday season might not have to wait long, as new evidence is making a September 10 Nintendo Direct look likely. That evidence in question is Just Dance: Decades of Hits. A recent leak saw gameplay from the upcoming Ubisoft title circulate online, leading to an official statement from the game's official X account(https://x.com/justdancegame/status/2093013175197130759?s=20). Far from simply acknowledging the leak, Ubisoft actually told players when they can expect a proper, official look at the game--September 10. "We're committed to sharing the complete picture with you on September 10, and we sincerely thank you for your patience and continued support in the meantime," Ubisoft's statement reads. https://twitter.com/justdancegame/status/2093013175197130759?s=20 As highlighted by Nintendo Everything(https://nintendoeverything.com/signs-pointing-to-possible-nintendo-direct-next-week/), Just Dance titles frequently appear during Nintendo Directs, with last year's Just Dance 2026 Edition announced during a summer presentation. Nintendo also has a history of premiering a Nintendo Direct ahead of the Tokyo Game Show, which kicks off on September 17 this year. The September 10 date then is looking promising, especially when combined with Nintendo's previous history. We recently explained why a September Nintendo Direct is likely to happen(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/why-a-nintendo-direct-is-likely-to-happen-next-month/); there has been an early-to-mid September Nintendo Direct almost every year for the past decade (with a late August direct in 2024 being the one exception). We'll know if the September 10 date is real by September 9 at the latest, as Nintendo has a history of announcing a Direct with around 24 hours notice. Even without taking into account whatever surprises Nintendo is potentially saving for the end of the year or the first half of 2026, the house of Mario already has two exclusive games fans are expecting more details and release dates for--The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/nintendo-finally-reveals-the-legend-of-zelda-ocarina-of-time-remake-for-2026/) and From Software's The Duskbloods(https://www.gamespot.com/games/the-duskbloods/). Both are slated to release in 2026 but don't yet have official release dates. In Zelda's case, we know almost nothing about the remake aside from a short teaser that lacked any gameplay(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/zelda-ocarina-remakes-lack-of-gameplay-did-it-a-disservice/), leading to fans wildly speculating on every aspect of information revealed so far. It seems safe to assume Nintendo's next Direct will give fans a more in-depth look. Those eagerly anticipating The Duskbloods got a chance to go hands-on with From Software's latest multiplayer experiment in a recent network test--one that reportedly saw more interest than Elden Ring Nightreign(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/the-duskbloods-playtest-was-even-more-popular-than-elden-ring-nightreigns/) and left us eager to play more(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/ive-never-played-anything-like-the-duskbloods-and-i-cannot-wait-to-play-more/). In addition to the two games above, Nintendo may also look to celebrate The Legend of Zelda's 40th anniversary. A recent leak showed a special Zelda-themed Switch 2(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/first-switch-2-special-edition-might-celebrate-zeldas-40th-anniversary-if-leaks-are-hy-real/), which could be officially announced at a potential September 10 Nintendo Direct.

Devolver Digital Reveals Its GTA 6 Competitor, And Itโ€™s A Remaster Of A Nonexistent Remake

Few game companies are brave enough to go head-to-head with the release of Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto 6(https://www.gamespot.com/games/grand-theft-auto-vi/), but that's exactly what publisher Devolver Digital is doing with the launch of Volvy's Adventure: Reslimed on November 19. Billed as a "remaster of the second remake of the original monochrome action-platformer starring the most famous video game mascot of all time," Volvy's Adventure is actually almost none of those things. The original "Volvy's Adventure" doesn't exist. This isn't a remaster but an entirely new and original game. Volvy, while actually being Devolver Digital's tongue-in-cheek platformer mascot, is obviously not the most famous of "all time." So what is Volvy's Adventure: Reslimed, actually? It's a Game Boy Color-style 2D platformer coming to Steam(https://store.steampowered.com/app/4523120/VolvysAdventureReslimed/) from developer Doinksoft, the studio behind 2D sidescrollers like Gato Roboto(https://www.gamespot.com/games/gato-roboto/) and Gunbrella(https://www.gamespot.com/games/gunbrella/). Volvy himself is a rat-esque (I think?) creature with one big hand and one small hand. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-UEeIDWVZY8 Like any good platforming mascot, Volvy dashes and jumps through levels while collecting items (in this case, onions), bouncing on the heads of enemies, and battling bosses. Occasionally, Volvy transforms into a hulked out alter-ego called Swolvy capable of smashing through anything that gets in his way. It's all a little absurd, but that's also what makes it fun. While much of the marketing and the entire premise of Volvy's Adventure: Reslimed comes off as a meta-video-game-industry joke, the actual game on display in its debut trailer looks like a rollicking good time. Volvy's Adventure: Reslimed is immediately reminiscent of its Game Boy Color-era inspirations, with a vibrant art style, a popping soundtrack, and kinetic movement. Volvy can dash through the air with his giant fist, burrow underground, or hover like a helicopter using his tail, and the trailer shows how all these abilities can all be chained together. GTA 6 will certainly be hogging the headlines when it releases in November, but the open-world crime simulator isn't everyone's cup of tea, is $80 (or $100)(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/heres-how-much-youll-pay-for-gta-6-and-whats-included-in-the-ultimate-edition/), and isn't releasing on PC at launch. Volvy's Adventure: Reslimed, at only $5, offers a nice bit of counterprogramming then for those who are looking for something else to do November 19. Surprisingly, Volvy isn't the only one bold enough to release on the same day as GTA 6. The Binding of Isaac: Repentance+ Online, a port adding online co-op, is also releasing November 19.
