Tom Cruise and Paramount Pictures have announced a sequel to Cruise's first big hit of the 1990s: Days of Thunder. Rumored for some time, the sequel will hit theaters in 2028 and also star Anne Hathaway, who has had a big summer with The Odyssey and The End of Oak Street.
What should we expect from the new Days of Thunder?
The original Days of Thunder followed Tom Cruise as Cole Trickle, a race car driver thrown into the wild world of NASCAR. Following the success of Top Gun: Maverick, reports emerged that Tom Cruise and Paramount were looking into reviving Days of Thunder.
Now, we know those reports were true, as Tom Cruise posted a short video about it on X. This video not only confirmed that Anne Hathaway will star in the movie with him and revealed a special race car livery that promoted a summer 2028 release window.
Plot details are still under wraps, and we don't know whether any of the original cast other than Cruise will return. Paramount did confirm that Cruise will portray Cole Trickle once again and that Hathaway's character is a "team owner and engineer" who is important to the sequel's narrative, though. It also narrowed the release window to June 2, 2028.
We also learned that the movie was written by Without Remorse scribe Will Staples and will be directed by Mr. Irrelevant: The John Tuggle Story's Jonathan Levine. Cruise is also a big supporter of theatrically releasing movies, so Paramount is already touting that Days of Thunder will be filmed in IMAX and released in IMAX, Dolby Cinema, and 4DX theatrical formats.
Days of Thunder will hit theaters on June 2, 2028. Before then, we'll see Tom Cruise in Alejandro Iñárritu's Digger later this year in a role that's very unusual for the actor.
