Pokémon TCG Pocket adds a game-changing new kind of card this October

Overview & Key Takeaways

Dual-type cards are finally making their way into Pokémon TCG Pocket this October, starting with a Mega Mewtwo X ex card

During a Pokémon TCG Pocket panel at the PokémonXP event in San Francisco, The Pokémon Company teased some exciting new types of cards for the mobile game. Namely, dual-type cards will make their way to the popular mobile game soon.

When are dual-type cards coming to Pokémon TCG Pocket?

Dual-type cards will become a thing in Pokémon TCG Pocket starting in October. The first dual-type card to arrive will be Mega Mewtwo X ex, which is a Psychic/Fighting-type Pokémon. It has 180 HP and a 100+ power Dual Impact ability that reads "If a stadium is in play, this attack does 40 more damage." This was highlighted in the latest trailer for Pokémon TCG Pocket, which also confirmed that ex cards for partner Pokémon Piplup and Fuecoco would arrive in October.

Dual-type Pokémon have been a thing in the video games ever since the first generation, but didn't come to the physical Pokémon Trading Card Game until the mid-2000s. According to Bulbapedia, there have been at least 90 dual-type Pokémon cards released in the decades since.

That made the fact that they were missing from Pokémon TCG Pocket a bit surprising initially, although the digital card game certainly hasn't suffered from a shortage of cards for players to collect. While Mega Mewtwo X ex is the only confirmed dual-type card for Pokémon TCG Pocket right now, a blog post on the Pokémon website confirms that more will follow.

In fact, that post also teases that the October update will "kick off a new series of Pokémon TCG Pocket expansions," so we should not expect the live service support for the game to wind down anytime soon. Dual-type cards and Pokémon ex cards for partner Pokémon will simply add even more possibilities as to what can be added to Pokémon TCG Pocket in the future.

The Game Informer Mobile App Is Now Available

!Game Informer News(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2026/08/24/c83d446d/gameinformerapp.jpg.webp) Here at Game Informer, we are excited to share a new way to engage with our content alongside our website(https://gameinformer.com/) and the print magazine(https://gameinformer.com/magazine-archive). The Game Informer app, which you can download for iOS(https://apps.apple.com/app/game-informer-magazine/id6752615812) or Android(https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gameinformer.app), shares all of our content in a new, even cleaner way (and not to pat ourselves on the back, but our website is pretty dang clean). The app is a gorgeous way to read all of our editorial content: news, reviews, previews, features, and even the full digital magazine for subscribers. The app also features a new, visually engaging version of our incredibly useful release calendar(https://gameinformer.com/2026). We curate this list and update it daily, and the in-app version looks great and offers more tools to sort and organize it so you can figure out exactly what games are coming out when. The app also organizes all our video content, from exclusive interviews to shows like The Game Informer Show podcast, New Gameplay Today, and more. It makes it easy to find and watch the videos you’re looking for. You’ll also have easy access to our full magazine archive in the app dating back to 1991 – that’s more than 380 issues of the magazine. And flipping your mobile device sideways gives you a better look at the full two-page spreads of every issue. Importantly, the app is algorithm-free. You get to curate your reading list by saving news stories, full issues, and episodes for later. You choose what you want to read – not what a recommendation algorithm guesses. While the app is live now, we're still working hard to polish it into the best version it can be. Keep an eye out for updates in the coming days and weeks to make the experience even smoother, and potentially add in some new features. The app is a new way to read Game Informer.  We’re excited for you to download the app(https://gameinformer.com/app) and check it out.
