I have modded many dogs, several cows, 2 lions, and a chimpanzee into Grand Theft Auto 5, and they are all my friends
Florida is a vast and wonderful menagerie. It is home to over a billion species (I didn't research that claim and nor should you), ranging from alligators to snakes to… alligators. Grand Theft Auto 6, I must assume, will be basically like a trip to the zoo with gun crime.
GTA 5, though? It does its best, but the animal quotient is low. In fairness, Los Santos, like its real-life counterpart, was not built to sustain life. But like so many things, this can be rectified through mods.
I have installed DogDog (it's about dogs), which is both a fan-made modification of the videogame Grand Theft Auto 5, and the source of history's most perfect English sentence: "You can summon your favorite dogs in any quantity you desire."

But it undersells itself. DogDog allows you to summon dogs(dogs), yes, but not just them. In addition to a small legion of loyal canines, you can also manifest cats, cows, lions, and—the following is based on the verified personal experience of this reporter—at minimum one chimpanzee.
Combo this dizzy-making new power with one of our previously installed mods, 2gether, and you can patrol the roadways of Los Santos with the entire cast of Homeward Bound at your back while a partying great ape sits on your back like you are a majestic and powerful steed. Which you are. Believe in yourself.

One issue with this—and sorry to be a bummer—is that, yes, there are still gang wars happening and flying cars loose from the surly bonds of Earth. So sometimes, ah, well, look: sometimes bad things happen to the animals. You have to try to walk them out in nature. It's where they belong, I suppose.
