'GTA 6' Won't Parody Trump or COVID, Rockstar Says

Overview & Key Takeaways

Grand Theft Auto 6 will parody and satirize modern American culture, but Rockstar wants to avoid dated references like Trump and the pandemic.

Rockstar Games is known for bringing biting and often puerile satire to its Grand Theft Auto games. The 13-year span between Grand Theft Auto 5 and Grand Theft Auto 6 means there's plenty of American culture to interrogate or poke fun at, but a few things will be off the table, according to new previews of Rockstar's upcoming game. Two things that GTA 6 won't directly address, according to a new report: Donald Trump’s rise to political power and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Many GTA players will be happy to hear that, as the games often serve as a fantastical escape that reflects a distorted version of reality. But Rockstar has other reasons for steering clear of real-world historical events.

"We run the risk of dating ourselves in a sort of awkward way," Rockstar North studio head Rob Nelson told The New York Times. "So we have to look at things and go, What is going to have a timeless sort of quality that will speak very easily to relatable sort of human folly and foibles and will be remembered as part of this time?"

It sounds like Rockstar may still make some oblique references to the rise of mainstreaming conspiracy theories in our current culture, an adjacent acknowledgment of Trump and coronavirus.

Nelson addressed the approach to satire in a separate preview on IGN: "Because we work on such a long development cycle, we have to not jump on stuff and instead choose our angle of approach carefully and decide what things are going to be a bit more timeless. We’re not a TV show coming out every week or every month. We have to be careful that what we’re choosing to satirize is not going to feel dated in a weird way. I think those broader things are OK to satirize, but very specific political issues or memes will date fast."

Previous Grand Theft Auto 6 trailers have leaned into popular memes, though, including what appeared to be a reference to the "Florida Joker" and a few viral TikTok clips.

But Nelson emphasized an attempt to keep GTA feeling "timeless," even avoiding contemporary slang to ensure that Rockstar's next game doesn't feel dated.

Grand Theft Auto 6 will be released on Nov. 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.

I think I know why Rockstar Games debuted its "extended look" of Grand Theft Auto VI on Netflix instead of immediately dropping it for free on YouTube. Unlike most video game trailers, the almost 27-minute preview of GTA VI felt more like a slice of a prestige crime drama than any video game trailer that &8230;

GTA 6 NPCs Will Notice If You’re Carrying A Weapon In Public

In Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto franchise, players have been able to walk the streets while armed to the teeth without attracting attention from the non-player characters populating the world. However, the NPCs in Grand Theft Auto 6(https://www.gamespot.com/games/grand-theft-auto-vi/) will be considerably more preceptive than their counterparts in the earlier games. And that means packing weapons in public is going to come at a price. According to a GTA 6 preview in The New York Times(https://www.nytimes.com/2026/08/27/arts/grand-theft-auto-vi-trailer-extended-look-rockstar.html), "a player in this one cannot whip out a shotgun or a rocket launcher and walk down the street without expecting the non-player characters to call the police." As disclosed in Netflix's extended GTA 6 preview special, the game has restored the six-star Wanted level(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/gta-6-returns-to-six-star-wanted-levels/) to the franchise. Presumably players will get into more trouble for firing a rocket launcher than simply holding one. But allowing the NPCs to behave more realistically to potential threats adds a new aspect that players will have to consider going forward. Although the apparent vocal stylings of the game's male antihero, Jason, have been negatively received(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/gta-6s-jason-has-a-case-of-bane-itis/), players have praised GTA 6's ability to interact with dogs(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/you-can-pet-and-scold-you-monster-the-dog-in-gta-6/) and its potentially complex love story(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/gta-6-story-is-about-whether-love-can-survive-through-this-storm/) between Jason and his co-lead, Lucia. GameSpot has put together a comprehensive roundup of everything we learned from Netflix's GTA 6 preview(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/gta-6s-big-reveal-all-the-things-we-learned/). Among the highlights are the expanded map size(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/gta-6-map-is-3x-bigger-than-red-dead-redemption-2s/) and a Red Dead Redemption 2-like honor system(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/gta-6-has-a-red-dead-2-honor-style-system-tracking-how-violent-you-are/) that keeps track of how the players behave in the game. Grand Theft Auto 6 will be released on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19.
