Xbox 25th Anniversary Release Sells Out Within Minutes, Despite $899 Price

Overview & Key Takeaways

The special 25th anniversary edition of the Xbox Series X sells out within minutes of pre-orders going live, making it a goldmine for scalpers.

The original Xbox console was released in November 2001, and to mark its 25th anniversary, Microsoft launched a celebratory special edition of the Xbox Series X this week. Pre-orders for the Xbox Series X25 limited edition console officially went live at 10 a.m. EDT on Thursday. At 10:01 a.m., they were already sold out. By the time Xbox tweeted about pre-orders going live, the 25th anniversary collection was out of stock.

The Xbox Series X25 console includes a special edition controller with the same translucent OG green style and a digital copy of Halo: Campaign Evolved, a remake of one of the most important Xbox titles.

Scalpers are taking advantage of Xbox's limited release

Even though it's a special edition console, some fans were shocked when it was revealed that the Xbox Series X25 would cost $899.99. When the original Xbox Series X came out six years ago, it cost $499.99. Due to an increase in hardware prices, it's gone up to $799.99. On one hand, the $100 on top of the base price tag isn't that much considering it's a special limited-edition console with a game included. On the other hand, it's a six-year-old console being sold for $899.99.

Whether it's too expensive or not doesn't seem to matter, as the anniversary-themed Xbox sold out within seconds. It is unknown whether Microsoft prepared for demand or bots and scalpers, but the truth is it's completely gone from the official Microsoft Store and other retailers.

On eBay, scalpers are asking anywhere from $1,500 to $3,000 for the console and a few have already succeeded in profiting from fans. eBay's sold items listings reveal that buyers have paid up to $2,995 to get the console from these second-hand sellers — more than triple its original price.

Xbox CEO Plays Coy About Whether Elder Scrolls 6 Will Skip PlayStation

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has suggested Microsoft could make more exclusive games again(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/xbox-clarifies-its-exclusivity-strategy-moving-forward-wants-you-to-buy-an-xbox/), but will The Elder Scrolls 6(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/the-elder-scrolls-6-release-date-trailer-news/1100-6492383/) be among them? We still don't know, but that's the question the BBC(https://www.youtube.com/shorts/2ua0Q65JXyE) asked Sharma at Gamescom(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/the-biggest-gaming-show-in-the-west-continues-to-grow/) this week. But first, Sharma discussed her thoughts generally about exclusives, and how every platform, in her estimation, needs some form of exclusive content to grow. "We are increasingly going to be one of the largest platforms in the world. Every platform needs some form of exclusive experiences and content," she said. "And so, what we've shared is Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution will be exclusive on console to Xbox. We're going to do the best we can to continue to do that, all in context of the business being healthy, and so we have to balance that." https://www.youtube.com/shorts/2ua0Q65JXyE Pressed to say if it is a "priority" to make The Elder Scrolls 6 exclusive to Xbox on console, Sharma smiled and said, "It's a beautiful game." Sharma recently visited the developers at Bethesda and offered an update on how the game was progressing(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/elder-scrolls-fans-think-theyve-worked-out-the-subtitle-for-elder-scrolls-6/). During her visit, protestors came to Bethesda's offices to drag Sharma for her decision to lay off thousands of Xbox developers(https://www.purexbox.com/news/2026/08/giant-rat-leads-protests-against-xbox-layoffs-outside-bethesda-hq), including people working on The Elder Scrolls 6. Due to these layoffs and other cuts, staffers at Bethesda are facing "crushing morale" and fears of more delays.(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/the-elder-scrolls-6-devs-fear-more-delays-after-layoffs-have-crushing-effect-on-morale/) In terms of Microsoft's approach exclusive games going forward, the team has said it will honor existing agreements for Xbox-made games that were previously announced as multiplatform releases. The Elder Scrolls 6 was announced in 2018, but at the time, Bethesda did not confirm platform details. Microsoft acquired Bethesda in 2021, and documents from the Microsoft vs. FTC case said The Elder Scrolls 6 was not planned for PS5(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/elder-scrolls-6-not-coming-to-ps5-and-wont-release-until-2026-at-the-soonest-microsoft-says/1100-6517794/). Former Xbox boss Phil Spencer, for his part, said in 2021(https://www.gq-magazine.co.uk/culture/article/xbox-phil-spencer-todd-howard-interview) that making games exclusive to Xbox is "not about punishing any other platform." He also alluded to the possibility of The Elder Scrolls 6 being exclusive to Xbox. "In order to be on Xbox, I want us to be able to bring the full complete package of what we have. And that would be true when I think about The Elder Scrolls 6," he said. "That would be true when I think about any of our franchises." Spencer spearheaded the effort to bring more Xbox games to rival platforms in a bid to make more money. He left Xbox earlier this year, and one of Sharma's first moves was to tell fans how important exclusives are to the business(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/xbox-must-have-exclusive-content-ceo-says/). Gears of War: E-Day, which launches this October, was reportedly planned for PS5(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/xbox-denies-that-gears-of-war-e-day-skipping-ps5-was-last-minute-decision-but-no-one-believes-that/) before Microsoft opted to make it exclusive on console to Xbox. Despite being announced more than eight years ago, The Elder Scrolls 6 still has no release date or official details.

The Most Expensive Xbox Ever Sold Out, And People Are Already Flipping It For Thousands

Microsoft opened up preorders for its limited-edition 25th-Anniversary Xbox Series X,(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/xbox-unveils-new-25th-anniversary-edition-xbox-series-x-based-on-original-xbox-and-its-gonna-be-pricey/) and within a minute, the most expensive Xbox ever sold out. While units will likely make their ways into the hands of Xbox fans with deep pockets, it looks like scalpers have also snatched up units, and as you'd expect, they're expecting to make a big payday by flogging them on sites like eBay. A quick look(https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?nkw=Xbox+25th+Anniversary+console&sacat=0&from=R40&dmd=2&rt=nc) at the commerce platform reveals dozens of the rare Xbox Series X consoles have been listed, with prices ranging from $2,200 all the way up to an incredibly optimistic $27,426 by one seller in Australia--likely as a way to grab the top spot on eBay's search page.  Microsoft opened up preorders with a $900 asking price for the console, so this is quite the jump. So far, it looks like quite a few of the consoles have been sold at the marked-up price, with several sales on eBay(https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?nkw=Xbox+25th+Anniversary+console&sacat=0&from=R40&dmd=2&rt=nc&LHSold=1) averaging between $1,900 to $2,300 per unit sold. !(https://www.gamespot.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Xbox-Ebay.jpg?w=636) That's a lot of cash for an Xbox! This is also an unpleasant reminder of the early years of the current console generation, as thanks to a semiconductor shortage, the Xbox Series X and the PS5 were hard to find. Scalpers using a variety of methods and programs were quick to snatch up restocks online and resold them, but supply chains eventually stabilized and access to the current console generation was easier--at least until a variety of factors saw their prices surge upwards(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/ps5-xbox-and-switch-2-heres-how-their-prices-have-changed-since-launch/) last year, with no sign of relief in the immediate future. This is also yet another thing that scalpers have ruined, as many hobbies has been impacted by hustle culture. The Pokemon Trading Card Game has been especially hard hit(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/you-might-need-a-face-scan-to-buy-pokemon-cards-soon-thanks-to-scalpers/), as every new restock at retailers usually sees scalpers buy up all of the available stock. Not even Pokemon donuts are safe(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/pokemon-krispy-kreme-boxes-are-being-listed-for-ridiculous-sums-of-money/), as the recent Krispy Kreme collaboration attracted plenty of people looking to make a quick buck. https://www.gamespot.com/articles/ps5-xbox-and-switch-2-heres-how-their-prices-have-changed-since-launch/ This is also yet another thing that scalpers have ruined, as many hobbies has been impacted by hustle culture.
