Say Hello To GTA 6's Awesome New Dialogue System

Overview & Key Takeaways

Netflix's extended look revealed how Jason and Lucia will speak during GTA 6's story, and how NPCs have been reworked for a more realistic experience

In Grand Theft Auto 5, dialogue was linear and scripted. Everything Michael, Franklin, or Trevor could say was predetermined by the game, and players couldn't meaningfully speak to NPCs. For Grand Theft Auto 6, Rockstar is digging deeper with a totally new dialogue system that is as slick as it is immersive.

GTA 6 does not present players with a dialogue wheel, nor does it plaster the screen with signals to whom the player can speak. Instead, the Netflix extended look revealed that a contextual option appears when the player is near a character they can speak to. Once a conversation begins, response options populate near the bottom right of the screen. These options barely take up any real estate, which helps conversations feel natural. As someone who hates taking screenshots that get cluttered with text or UI, I welcome Rockstar's implementation of dialogue.

These systems are visible in less than a minute in Netflix's new footage. In it, Jason goes up to a bouncer -- and the game presents him with two possible ways to get his attention. Later on, Jason finds a dog. The game offers three potential options; Scold, Pet, and Study.

How does GTA 6's NPC dialogue work?

Ambient NPC dialogue is back and better than ever. The player can hear conversations that background characters have as they explore the game, and these can be surprisingly elaborate. NPCs can also react to the player depending on what they do or how they dress. If you're carrying a gun, for example, NPCs will take note of it. According to an insider who allegedly worked on the game's audio, NPCs have "hundreds of thousands" of lines that were recorded multiple times, to account for different emotional registers and situations. If the NPC recognizes you, for example, what they'll say will sound different than if they see you committing a crime with a mask. NPCs can also chain conversations with one another depending on the situation that is unfolding.

Aspects like an NPC's level of fear, the time of day, the weather, and demographic variations can all impact what NPCs will say. Thelonger you stay in an area, the more GTA 6 makes an effort to switch up nearby NPC's dialogue. The audio worker claims that Rockstar trialed this system by having people stand in one place for twenty minutes to make sure dialogue was not repeated.

While many of these claims cannot be verified, they were made five months before the leaks — and that more recent footage appears to support many of its claims. We also know that Rockstar dedicated an entire team to NPC behavior for GTA 6. These developers made sure that even minor things, like NPC fashion, have an ecosystem built around them. It stands to reason the studio fleshed out dialogue in a similar way.

The new NPC dialogue mechanics will go a long way toward making Leonida feel like a living, breathing ecosystem. Player dialogue, on the other hand, may not have Mass Effect level repercussions — but it does help GTA 6 feel more like an interactive movie, not a series of story cutscenes.

Grand Theft Auto 6 will be released on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X on Nov. 19.

GTA VI looks just as great as we could hope for

Netflix and Rockstar Games finally debuted their "extended look" at Grand Theft Auto VI. It showed that the new game looks to keep much of the spirit of GTA - exploration, driving, crimes, shooting, and cinematic story scenes. But everything just looks much better than previous entries, with impressive graphics, densely-packed rooms, and detailed environments. &8230;

GTA 6 Skipping PC At Launch And Having No Online Right Away Is Good, Helldivers Boss Says

The CEO of Helldivers studio Arrowhead Game Studios has commented on the upcoming launch of GTA 6(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/gta-6-leaks-a-timeline-of-the-events-so-far/), saying he's happy there will be no PC version or online mode at launch, because that will help Helldivers 2 "keep crushing it." In a statement to press, Sham Jorjani said Rockstar makes "ridiculous, high-effort stuff, and it's awesome that games like this get made." He said he's selfishly happy that the game won't be on PC at launch, nor will there be an online mode right away. "It means Helldivers 2 gets to keep crushing it in our own space, and is also why it won’t be the all consuming behemoth everyone’s worried about," he said. Rockstar has confirmed GTA 6 will launch on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, but the developer has not said a word about a possible PC edition. Additionally, Rockstar has said GTA 6 is a "single-player experience," but the company has not confirmed outright that there won't be an online mode at launch. It's expected Rockstar will evolve GTA Online in some form for GTA 6(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/with-gta-6-online-rockstar-is-deciding-who-to-make-mad/), but we don't know anything about that yet. With GTA 5, the game launched first on console before later coming to PC. For GTA 6, it's expected the game will also eventually come to PC. Additionally, it won't be unprecedented if GTA 6 launches with no online mode, as GTA 5 also launched without one. Jorjani went on to say Rockstar has "the brand power to confidently take their time and run their classic play," as opposed to chasing trends and pivoting like some other developers do. "They have the confidence and freedom to spend a decade doing things the old-school way because they know the core game will deliver. It’s going to raise the bar for sure," he said. The "Extended Look" for GTA 6(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/gta-6-netflix-trailers-beefy-runtime-revealed-footage-captured-on-ps5/) aired today, August 27, on Netflix. For more, be sure to read GameSpot’s breakdown ofhow to watch and what to expect from the GTA 6 Extended Look event(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/gta-6-extended-look-how-to-watch-what-to-expect-and-more/). The Netflix event comes after GTA 6 has suffered numerous, significant gameplay leaks. Rockstar reacted to the scandal, saying the leaks are “heartbreaking” for the developers(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/rockstar-finally-comments-on-all-those-gta-6-leaks-heartbreaking-for-our-team/). GTA 6 launches on November 19 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. It’s coming to market with an incredible amount of hype behind it, in part because fans have been waiting 13 years for the sequel to GTA 5(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/the-biggest-gaming-stories-that-happened-since-gta-5-came-out-13-years-ago/).
