Crimson Desert's 2.0 update's most surprising change is an effort to make Kliff a fully realised character with thoughts and opinions
Crimson Desert didn't get its jaws into me as deep as I'd hoped—partially because of its somewhat scattershot, overwhelming nature. This is purely a matter of personal taste, mind. If I weren't obligated to keep up with new games, my MMOs of choice, and y'know, social obligations, I probably would've gotten arm-deep within Pearl Abyss' systems-driven buffet.
I do have to give its developer credit, though. Crimson Desert has been utterly flooded with free updates without any sign of actually stopping. The latest in this long line is the "Crimson Desert Enhanced" patch, which is live now on PC and was announced during Gamescom 2026 opening night live.
In terms of nitty-gritty gameplay changes, it'll now be easier to get skill points for all three of the main cast, rather than having to ration out your Abyss Artefacts across all of 'em. There's also eight new skills for main man Kliff himself, UI tweaks, and bug fixes.

But the premier feature of this patch is a re-tuning of the game's main story—it's unclear how deep this goes, but doing some digging and watching playthroughs (such as this helpful primer by YouTube channel GamingBolt) shows Kliff's first foray into the abyss accompanied by a mournful reflection on his history with his Greymane companions. Meaningful story—or lack thereof—was a major complaint on launch for Crimson Desert, so it's nice to see Pearl Abyss trying to turn Kliff into more than a gruff yes man.
He's no longer completely lacking in introspection, either. In the same video, we join Kliff several months later not nattering to some random jobber, but actually thinking about the crazy magical events that have led him to this point. Character development? Could it be?
I'm yet to invent time travel, so I haven't had 60 spare hours to chew through the opening questlines of Crimson Desert's revamped story to tell you whether it does a good job or not, but I'm honestly charmed by the effort, anyway.
I legitimately think Pearl Abyss could've simply gotten away with allowing the game's storyline to take a backseat, but recognising and addressing that major complaint—the scattershot, absurd nature of the game's opening hours—is a valiant task to take on.
