Square Enix announces Terranigma remaster that will bring the classic RPG to the US for the first time
The Super NES was heavily defined by the many great role-playing games released for the system. Final Fantasy 4 and 6 helped the series reach new heights; EarthBound redefined what the genre could be; and Chrono Trigger became perhaps the best game ever made. That's only a few examples. Beyond the big names everyone knows now, there are even more underrated gems that have slipped through the cracks and been largely forgotten. One such game is Terranigma, which is about to get another shot thanks to a new remaster.
Published by Enix and developed by Quintet, Terranigma was initially released in Japan in 1995, with releases in Europe and Australia a year later. While there were plans for an English translation, Enix's U.S. subsidiary closed before the game was set to release. Because of this, the game was never released in North America. That will finally change next year, as developer Clear River Games has announced a remaster of the action-RPG titled Terranigma — Rebirth.
Terranigma is the third and final entry in an unofficial trilogy of games developed by Quintet that also includes 1992's Soul Blazer and 1993's Illusion of Gaia, which is arguably the most popular of the three titles. The game follows protagonist Ark, a young boy who opens a mysterious box that unleashes a curse on his small village. This sets him off on an adventure to save his village and revive the decaying world. The game has gorgeous pixel art typical of the era, and a fascinating story that blends fantasy RPG tropes with a more pointed environmentalist message that predates Final Fantasy 7 by two years. While the game is a cult classic, it has a notorious difficulty spike that makes the experience grueling.

Clear River Games hasn't revealed exactly what updates it is bringing to the game in the remaster beyond gesturing at quality-of-life updates and bonus features. While Square Enix has become known for remaking its classic RPGs with its HD-2D engine, Terranigma — Rebirth will be more of a straight remaster that retains the game's original pixel art.
Terranigma — Rebirth will be released in early 2027 for Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.
