The Asus ROG Xbox Ally X20 Costs $1,300, And The OLED Screen Better Be Worth It

GameSpot » All News RSS FeedDarryn Bonthuys4 min read(about 3 hours ago)

Overview & Key Takeaways

Almost a year after launch, the Asus Xbox ROG Ally is getting an upgrade--and a hefty price increase--in the form of the X20 model. Revealed earlier this year as part of a bundle sold with a set of XR glasses, Asus has opened preorders for the handheld gaming PC, with prices starting at an eye-watering $1,300 from the official Asus online store and Best Buy.

What does an extra $300 get you? The biggest draw is the screen, as Asus has equipped this model with a 7.4‑inch 1080p OLED 120Hz HDR display. The shell is also constructed from translucent plastic so you can see the inner workings of the ROG Ally X20, and those internals include an 80Wh battery, 1TB of storage capacity, 24GB of DDR5 RAM, and Wi-Fi 6 connectivity. The X20 also features a redesigned layout meant to improve airflow and thermal efficiency, as these units can get hot while running demanding games.

Asus added that it has improved the D-pad and installed TMR magnetic induction analog sticks. The unit still runs on the AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor, which is capable of handling modern games smoothly. If you've got $2,500 to spare, you can also grab a bundle deal that includes the ROG Ally X20, a pair of 240Hz ROG XReal X1 glasses, a Dbrand Killswitch protective case set, and a Pelican case to store everything in.

That's a lot of dough for a handheld, but it's not too surprising. The global shortage of memory driven by AI has seen component prices skyrocket, and several manufacturers of handheld gaming PCs have had to adjust their prices. Earlier this year, AyaNeo suspended preorders and early-bird sales of its Next 2 handheld in response to rapidly rising costs, while console prices are also feeling the pinch. The silver lining is that the makers of retro handhelds are filling the gap for affordable gaming on the go, and these cheap units make more sense than ever in 2026.

Pricing for the $1,000 Xbox ROG Ally X and its smaller-specced $600 sibling hasn't increased (yet), and both machines are a pretty great option for playing PC and Xbox games on the go--if you can afford them. While both devices did have some teething issues with their software, recent updates have smoothed out these problems, and the Xbox app works well as a platform for users to launch games from Microsoft's store, Steam, and more.

A Day One Console Patch Will Make The Blood Of Dawnwalker Run At 60 FPS

!Game Informer News(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2026/08/24/506a7a06/thebloodofdawnwalker-everythingyouneedtoknow0-40screenshot.jpg.webp) Rebel Wolves, developers of The Blood of Dawnwalker, put out a trailer last week(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K86Af9y312U&pp=ygUXdGhlIGJsb29kIG9mIGRhd253YWxrZXI%3D) showing off console gameplay of their upcoming action role-playing adventure, but the new footage ended up backfiring. The video revealed that PS5 and Xbox Series X versions of the game would not be able to run at 60 frames per second, instead targeting 40, which frustrated many, as 60 frames is considered the standard for action games like this. Today, developer Rebel Wolves issued a new announcement(https://x.com/DawnwalkerGame/status/2091812822082580778?s=20): The Blood of Dawnwalker will run at 60 fps after all, thanks to a day one patch coming to consoles. "Performance Mode was already in the works, but it was still being tested," a post on the official Dawnwalker social media pages reads. "We simply weren’t ready to promise it yet. We heard your feedback. It was clear how much this mattered to many of you, so we focused on finishing the next round of tests. Those results gave us the confidence we needed to confirm Performance Mode for Day 1." The developers go on to state that the patch will now allow the PS5 and Xbox Series X versions of the game to target 60 fps in Performance Mode, 40 fps in Balanced Mode, and 30 FPS in Quality Mode. The PS5 Pro version of the game will include "overall visual enhancements," though Rebel Wolves doesn't elaborate exactly on what that means. Finally, the less-powerful Xbox Series S will be stuck at 30 FPS. Personally, I hope Rebel Wolves succeeds on this day one patch, though I do find it surprising that it expects to turn this around by September 3, the game's release date – it seems like a tall ask in a short window. Still, I (and most everyone else, I assume) would prefer to play The Blood of Dawnwalker at 60 FPS, so I'm looking forward to seeing the studio pull it off. Rebel Wolves was founded by developers who formerly worked at CD Projekt Red on beloved games like The Witcher and Cyberpunk 2077, so the hype around its upcoming project is substantial, even alongside the fall's other major releases.
