Creature-collecting RPGs have been a fixture of gaming for decades, with Pokémon and Digimon among the genre’s best-known names. Palworld brought a more chaotic spin to the formula and, after being described as “Pokémon with guns,” has now expanded into its own trading card game and has an MMO spinoff in the works.
It's tough living in Pikachu's shadow (especially fat Pikachu), but plenty of monster-catching games inspired by Pokémon exist — even if they rarely receive the same attention. If you want to dive into another monster-taming title with a fresh story and new creatures, a turn-based monster-taming RPG that has flown under the radar is currently free to keep on Steam: Dokimon Quest.
Dokimon Quest is a turn-based RPG set in a pixel-art world inspired by the Game Boy Color era. Developed by Yanako RPGs, Dokimon Quest is free to keep on Steam for a limited time. Players have until Aug. 26 at 10 a.m. PDT to add it to their libraries. Once claimed, the game is yours to keep, even if you don’t download it right away.
What is Dokimon Quest about?
The game follows a young trainer searching for a missing childhood friend while capturing, training and battling alongside more than 140 original monsters. Its story unfolds across a dangerous open world filled with towns, caves, shrines, seas and mountains.
The 15- to 20-hour adventure includes turn-based battles against rival rangers and shady corporations, along with overworld encounters that let players fight monsters directly in their surroundings. Players can also hunt for rare creatures and alternate color variations after completing the main story.

Dokimon Quest includes several modern quality-of-life features that you'd be begging for in the original Pokémon games, including sped-up battles, optional battle tips and a quest log. Players can choose between 8-bit and piano versions of the soundtrack, select from nine playable characters and customize the game’s appearance with more than 20 retro color palettes.
Released in 2024, Dokimon Quest has “Mostly Positive” reviews on Steam, with about three-quarters of players recommending it. Yanako RPGs is also working on Dokimon: Quest 2, though the sequel does not yet have a release date.
