Overview & Key Takeaways

Mutiny's opening weekend might be compromised following Amazon's accidental leak of the movie on Prime Video.

Is there anything better than watching an action-packed Jason Statham movie at the end of August? It's a great way to turn your brain off for a bit and unwind. On Aug. 21, action movie fans could hit the cinema to watch Mutiny, the latest addition to Statham's filmography. Regrettably, due to a leak on Amazon's part, some were able to watch early.

As Deadline reported, Amazon accidentally leaked the entire Mutiny movie on Prime Video. Viewers who were curious clicked on it and were able to watch it before it was removed from the platform. Unfortunately for Lionsgate, the film's distributor, this gave internet pirates plenty of time to download it and share it on torrent websites.

In Mutiny, Statham plays the role of Cole Reed, a former soldier and cop who's retired to become a multimillionaire's personal bodyguard. He is wrongfully accused of a serious crime and follows the real perpetrators on board a cargo ship to seek revenge โ€” the typical Jason Statham retired, ex-military arc that's always great fun.

Like Statham's The Beekeeper, Mutiny cost $40 million to produce. With low ratings from critics, its opening weekend was already shaping up to be shaky, and this ordeal may have made things worse. "They can now blame any box office underperformance on Amazon," said 007meow on a Reddit thread about the incident. User Bhu124 replied with "That's absolutely what they're going to do. No one is more happy this happened than Lionsgate. They're gonna get a f*ckton of money out of Amazon for this."

We'll never know how well Mutiny could have performed if it hadn't been leaked, so Amazon will have to take the fall if the movie ends up flopping. Deadline currently estimates that it will make between $7 million and $9 million this weekend.
