'Pokémon' Unreal Engine Remake Reimagines A Classic 21 Years Later

Overview & Key Takeaways

One solo dev has spent two years painstakingly recreating one of the greatest Pokémon games ever made, with huge visual upgrades and new features

As the world whispered about the possibility of an official Pokémon Emerald Nintendo Switch port, one solo developer brought that fantasy to life. Gamma Emerald is an Early Access game that updates the iconic Game Boy Advance title for 2026, with all the features fans expect from modern Pokémon games.

So far, Gamma Emerald includes everything in the original Pokémon Emerald from the starting town of Littleroot all the way to Mauville City. The 2D-HD sprite work is gorgeous and easy to appreciate, given that Pokémon follow you in the overworld. There are three gyms to defeat, and developer UndreamedPanic estimates the in-progress version of the title has around six hours of gameplay total. That is, unless the player wants to have another go at it: the remake includes the original game's rematch system.

Notably absent are double battles and online multiplayer. The developer has mostly focused on improving the core version of the game, but there are some new additions as well. There's a day and night cycle, which the original game lacked, as well as improvements to HM moves — no more wasting a slot on Cut. Gamma Emerald also adopts Generation IV's split of Physical and Special move categories, rather than relying only on move types. There's some online functionality, like trading. One big quality of life improvement: the player's storage box is accessible at all times, not just when they're in front of a PC.

In late July 2026, the developer said on X that everything from the "engine to tools to sprites, music, models, sounds," was the result of 12-hour programming days over the course of 18 months. Though UndreamedPanic expressed fatigue after releasing Gamma Emerald and told fans they may take a long break, the remake has already received one update full of bug fixes.

"No one wants to work for free on a fan game and I don't have the money to pay people, the developer wrote on X back in April 2026. "It is what it is."

On the remake's itch.io page, developer UndreamedPanic told fans, "If you enjoy this, please buy the official games."

"No money is accepted for this project in any form," they added.
