'Super Smash Bros. Melee' Tournament Ends With a Strange Moment That's Gone Viral
Overview & Key Takeaways
At this weekend's CEO tournament, the grand finals for 'Super Smash Bros. Melee' came to an unexpected stop.
Decades after its release, Super Smash Bros. Melee for the GameCube still has a very active competitive scene, with regular major tournaments and even a custom-built emulator that enables smooth online play. Thanks to the long-running nature of Melee’s competitive scene, we’ve been gifted plenty of colorful characters over the years. Two of these top-level mainstays, Juan “Hungrybox” DeBiedma and Cody Schwab, were at the center of a strange snafu that happened in the grand finals of this weekend’s massive Florida-based tournament, CEO.
The strange happening came as Hungrybox and Schwab faced off in their fifteenth match of the tournament. Hungrybox had previously beaten Schwab in the winners' finals match, sending Schwab to the losers’ bracket (most fighting game tournaments are double elimination, meaning you need to lose two sets to be out of the event). As the two players battled it out in the final game of the tournament, Hungrybox was up three stocks to two when the following happened.
For those who don’t understand what’s going on, Schwab appears to recoil from something, which causes him to stop playing. The commentators are unsure about what’s happening and assume Schwab’s controller is malfunctioning. Hungrybox looks concerned, as his eyes dart between his opponent and the screen. However, Hungrybox’s confusion doesn’t keep him from sneaking in two hits on his opponent mid-conversation, causing Schwab to clearly yell, “What are you doing?” Out of context, the sequence looks hilarious and quickly went viral on social media.
As for what actually happened here, Schwab wrote on X, “For the people asking about game 15, Hbox got a little too hype and it shook the hell out of my chair, but I also don’t think I would’ve won anyways. I just asked for a reset given that I got completely thrown off. Genuinely no harm no foul.” Right before Schwab stops playing, you can see Hungrybox scooting his seat back, which appears to be what threw Schwab off.
That said, the situation is extremely unusual because pausing a match for any reason is quite frowned upon in competitive play. In Super Smash Bros. (or any other fighting game), if a player stops for any reason, they are generally expected to forfeit the round or match, even for something out of their control like controller issues. Because of this, Schwab stopping play and asking for a position reset has garnered quite a bit of criticism.
Both players have had colorful moments over the past week. Just a week ago, Hungrybox popped off so aggressively after a tournament win that he literally fainted. Meanwhile, Schwab apparently had food poisoning while competing at CEO, but still managed to reach the grand finals. 25 years later, Super Smash Bros. Melee shows little sign of slowing down, with viral moments fueling at least a bit of that momentum.
