Overview & Key Takeaways

It's a brand new week - for some people, that means easing into it, but for others, it means chasing perfect grades while a screen fills with missiles. Frutz has arrived at a useful time. Out now on iOS and Android, Frutz is a retro-inspired side-scrolling arcade shooter that takes you through five cosmic worlds. Lord Zorkannan has handed the five Cosmic Gems to his strongest guardians, which is inconvenient, so you will need to defeat each one before meeting him in the Cosmic Rift. Until then, his guardians are busy filling every planet with enemies and hazards.

Getting there means shooting constantly, dodging enemy waves and grazing close to danger to keep combos going. You can dash through tight patterns, collect gems and use weapons including spread shots, lasers, missiles, shields and bombs. Each stage is short and handcrafted, with scores, grades and crowns attached to every run.

A full journey takes you through all five worlds. The Forest Planet starts with overgrown chaos, followed by an Ice World that changes how you move and a Volcanic world built around magma pressure. Storm Ruins brings shifting flows before the Cosmic Rift starts warping reality, presumably because straightforward space travel was deemed too relaxing.

Beat a guardian and you will unlock its Cosmic Gem ability permanently, although it can only be used once per level. Clearing the campaign is only part of it, with S ranks and no-hit runs waiting for anyone who wants to learn every stage properly. Short levels work best when they make restarting feel immediate, especially when a missed grade is plainly your fault.

And yes, you can unlock a golden ship.

In any case, our list of the best arcade games on iOS has enough score chasing to take care of whatever is up ahead for the week.

SoulTerra Odyssey sees Bandai Namco take a crack at colourful, roguelike, match-three action

Over the weekend, a trailer for a new release caught my eye. With colourful match-three gameplay and some obvious RPG elements, I was curious why I hadn't heard of it before. Imagine my surprise upon finding out that SoulTerra Odyssey had just hit soft launch for Australia, the Philippines, New Zeland and the UK, and from none other than Bandai Namco. SoulTerra Odyssey pitches itself as a distinctive blend of match-three puzzle gameplay, roguelite upgrades and RPG battles as you explore a colourful cartoon world with just a hint of grit to it. You'll recruit a crew of quirky passengers to help out in your adventures, and leverage their abilities in battle. ... That’s My Balloon! turns balloon popping into an iOS score chase

It seems that today has been given over to arcade releases. Frutz had me dodging missiles earlier, and now That’s My Balloon! wants me to spend the evening popping balloons. At least this one does not expect me to inflate them first. Out now on iOS, That’s My Balloon! is a one-tap arcade release built around spotting balloons and bursting them before they float off the screen. You will also need to avoid dangerous surprises that drift across the screen. As rounds continue, balloons become harder to catch, and those hazards start making the one-tap controls considerably less relaxing. ... Running an army sounds like a lot of work. Fortunately, Fallen Souls: Idle RPG is an idle RPG, so at least some of it carries on without you. Although with five heroes and 25 warriors to arrange across a 30-slot battlefield, you may still find yourself doing more admin than expected. Peraspera’s dark fantasy RPG is out now on Android. It sees you gathering heroes from different factions, merging warriors into stronger tiers and recruiting goddesses who provide buffs and special abilities, while developing those bonds strengthens the rest of your formation too. ...
