Overview & Key Takeaways

Back in the PSP days, video game designer Tetsuya Mizuguchi decided he wanted to make a puzzler for the platform, eventually creating Lumines. Since then, it's been released on consoles and PC alongside mobile. But handheld is its real home, and it makes a glorious return today on iOS and Android as Lumines Remastered.  If the name is completely new to you, Lumines is a block-dropping puzzler, where you have to create a 2x2 square by aligning blocks that drop in the same configuration. There are only ever two colours, but it's trickier than you might think, particularly if you're going for a high score.  ... [MORE]

Once created, your new square will turn solid, remaining on the board until the timeline swings by to disintegrate it for you. While you wait, you can try to create even more squares to multiply your score. However, being too reckless will quickly fill the board up and lead to a game over.

A new (old) kid on the block

side of it. But I'd argue the real majesty of Lumines lies in the audio and visual department. It boasts absolutely fantastic music that, combined with the inherently relaxing nature of block matching, puts you in an almost hypnotic state of mind.

It all chops and changes as well, with the backgrounds (known as skins here) shifting along with the soundtrack whenever you hit a certain level. The colours of the blocks will also change, with the sound effects that accompany dropping and rotating switching out too. It stops everything from getting overly repetitive. Check out my Lumines Remastered first impressions to learn more about why I love it.

Lumines Remastered is available now on the App Store and Google Play, where it's free-to-try. If you want to pick up the full version, it'll cost you $7.99 or your local equivalent. You can download it for your preferred platform using the buttons below.
